What to do with old car seat?

I got a used car seat and have just noticed on the back it says "DO NOT USE AFTER DECEMBER 31, 2009."  Well, what do I do with it now?  I feel kind of guilty throwing it in the dumpster, but is there any other option?

TIA

  • My understanding is that you are supposed to cut the straps so it can't be used for anyone else and throw it away.  It has a date for safety reasons.

    This - exactly.

  • Some firestations do a vehicle safety week and will trade old car seats for new ones. Check in your area and see if the police or fire departments do something like this.
  • You could always donate it to a shelter or a church.

  • Your supposed to cut the straps to make it un-useable.

But BRU did a trade in a while back, bring old baby gear in, get 20% off, you might want to hold onto it in case they do that again.  Otherwise, do the above.

I don't think a shelter or church will accept it because of the expiration date on the back.  Besides, I understand the point of not wanting to throw it away but to give it to someone else, even if they could use it when the manufacturer can't guarantee its safety isn't a great 'gift'/donation in my opinion.  As sad as it is to get rid of something that in all likelihood is fine, I wouldn't do it - god forbid something happen to the baby that was in it...I would feel horrible.

  • Don't donate to a shelter or a church as the car seat may not be safe. Take it to a local fire station or cut the belts and throw it out.
  • There is a purpose for the expiration date.  The fluctuations in temps. from hot to cold from sitting in cars causes stress on the plastic.  This makes it weaker and more likely to "give" during even a minor vehicle collision.  Not to mention the general wear and tear that an infant puts on the seat.

It's best to destroy the seat.
