How did you potty train your boy?

Any details would be great.  Any specific books you followed?  We have the Elmo Potty dvd, which my son loves but mostly he has no interest in using the potty.  We have seats for the toilets and he has sat on them a few times but nothing has come out of it ;)

 Thank you!

Re: How did you potty train your boy?

  • this probably wont be much help, but I waited for DS to tell me when he was ready.  I didn't use any books or DVD's or anything.  He just all of a sudden wanted to start using the potty, so i put him in a pull up and went along with it, sometimes he would tell me, other times he wouldn't. When he got to the point of telling me most of the time, then i put him in a pair of big boy undies to see what he did, he was good for about half the day, then he had an accident and didn't want them on anymore, ok so we went back to pull ups, about a week later HE wanted to put big boy undies on and boom, he's been potty trained for 7 months and MIGHT of had 6 accidents so far.

With DS, he liked to hear his pee hit the water, plus he wanted to be like daddy, so i think that helped alot.

Have you tried maybe just putting your DS on the potty every half hour or hour and see what he does??

Oh and we also made a big deal when DS would go on the potty, we didn't reward him with anything, but we did praise him with a good job, lots of clapping, woo hoos, kisses and hugs.

  • I waited till DS showed interest. I let him run around naked for a bit, he aimed at cheerios when he peed and viola. If he had a harder time, we would've given him some M&M's as a reward. Pull-ups worked too.
  • I did the "food" technique.  I waited until he was 2 1/2 and told him that every time he went pee he would get one chocolate star and when he went poop he'd get two chocolate stars (the Brach's brand candies).  He was fine after 3 days...maybe less I guess.  Once I put him in underwear he never went back...never used pull-ups for naps or bedtimes or for going out of the house.  I was very consistant and asked him about every hour (at first)...even after I felt he was "trained".  I will still ask (he's 3 1/2) and if I see him "dancing" I KNOW he has to go and just take him in the bathroom because if I ask he'll say no because he wants to keep playing.  If I just went with him saying "no" although I know for sure he has to (because he is "dancing") then it is a mad dash to the bathroom.  He has only had one accident and it's been a year.

Oh BTW...once the one package of chocolate stars were gone I would just say "mama will have to buy more at the store" and it was all good...and I never bought more.  : )
