***Read2Me*** or other Rochester nesties

I think you were my Rochester person over here.

I posted on the Upstate NY board but thought I might be able to grab your attention over here while waiting for others to respond there too.

We're possibly looking to move to Rochester in the Spring. I grew up more towards north of Syracuse so I'm not as familiar with the surrounding areas of Rochester. I'm trying to get some initial searching done online and get an idea of COL, primarily rent and utilities for the area.

Depending on where all the circumstances fall we may be looking at needing to pay for our mortgage here, plus rent there for a while. What sounds reasonable for trying to find an apartment around the Rochester area? What towns are reasonably priced, but still good safe areas to live?

FWIW, DH is considering taking a job in Buffalo; but ultimately we'd be heading more east bound in the Finger Lakes on a long term basis. That's why we're considering Rochester as a good middle ground. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm leaving a lot of details out so not to bore you with too much info.

  • Hi -We actually just relocated to Rochester ourselves recently and love it here!  Houses and rent are both very reasonable (especially compared to the High COL we moved from).  There are tons of great houses for sale here under $200K.  For rent, depending on where in the area you live, 2 bedroom apartments seem to range from $700-1200/mo.  Our RG&E bill is usually just over $100/mo.

Most of the suburbs of Rochester are good, safe, and affordable places to live.  Some Towns where there are a lot of good options include Penfield, Webster, Greece, Brighton, Chili, and Hennrietta.  Pittsford and Fairport are also very nice towns, but you tend to get less for your money when it comes to apartments and homes since people will pay more to be in those school districts.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks that's very helpful. Chili was the only one I knew was a good place. My former college roommate actually teaches in that district and she is an awesome teacher (3rd grade). I really need to catch up with her too.

  • Hi!  We would love to have you here in Rochester!  As for where to live, there are a lot of great communities.  We live in the city in an awesome area and my parents live in Buffalo while DH's live in Syracuse and we are almost smack in the middle.  If your DH is planning to commute to Buffalo you may want to stick to the west-side suburbs (LeRoy, Spencerport, Gates, Chili).  That would keep his commute around an hour each way depending on where in Buffalo he was working.

Feel free to email me if you need any more info or if you find some places that look good and want an opinion on them:  kara at eskimospy dot com

Thanks, I'll save your info. For right now I just tried to get a quick glimpse at things online. I just want to see if it's even doable to be able to handle our mortgage plus rent on DH's income. Looks tight, but we may be able to do it. For now we're in a holding pattern though, the company isn't looking to add the position until the new year. Which is perfect for us since we don't want to be moving until after the baby is born anyway.
