? about rice cereal

I plan on talking to my pedi about this, but I wanted to see what you guys thought too.

DD eats about 5-6 oz every 3 hours.  When she gets hungry about 2 1/2 - 3 hours after eating, she gets fussy then starts SCREAMING.  Every time.  I don't understand how she could get SO upset so quickly.  I wonder if she is just not getting full on formula alone.

I talked to a friend of mine yesterday who said that her DD was eating 50+ oz a day at 2 months so her pedi had her start rice cereal to help fill her up better.

So my ? is, do your LOs scream like that at meal times?  Is this normal?  Or has anyone experienced this and had the pedi say to start cereal?

Re: ? about rice cereal

  • Is your LO spitting up?  B/c it could be reflux that is making her scream.

I doubt your pedi is going to suggest rice cereal. Your LO is so young.

  • No. Are you sure baby is crying for food and not just for comfort suckling? Their tummies cannot digest food this young so I'm always shocked when people say their ped told them they could start cereal.

  • Yes, DD used to do this when she was that age. She would eat and then if she got hungry I had a very small window to respond or she would go into panic mode. I didn't think anything was wrong with it. Once she received the bottle she was very happy. If your LO is eating every 2 1/2-3 hours I would say she is getting satisfied from the formula. 2 mos is way too young IMO to start cereal. ETA: The window for response time has gotten larger as DD has grown. I don't think there is a problem.

  • My MIL said that I should try to feed my DD a little bit of rice cereal. She is also eating 5-6 oz every two and half three hours. She just started this and gives me her "I am hungry ma" cry (she doesn't spit up much *knock on wood*). I will also talk to my pedi about it.
  • I have always heard that babies shouldn't start rice cereal until 4 months at the earliest.
  • DD eats 5-6 oz every 3-4 hours and, yes, she screams when she is hungry.  No little whimpering, full blown screams.  I told the Doc about it today and he said she was eating a healthy amount and a the screams wee just her way of letting me know she was ready.  He doesn't recommend rice cereal/cereals or any other type of solid until at least 4 months.
  • She spits up, but not excessively I don't think.  We had to switch formulas several times and finally settled on Up & Up lactose sensitive which seems to be doing much better.  She spit up the regular Enfamil and Gentlease a lot more than she does this stuff.

I try giving her a paci when she gets upset like that, but it only appeases her for a minute or two.  I still think she is too young for cereal too, but I keep hearing from so many people that they did cereal at this age, so I was curious.

I love your siggy pic...your LO is adorable!

  • I BF but we think LO may have reflux and was screaming after feedings. The pedi told us to put a little rice cereal in a bottle of pumped milk and see if we see any difference. She has been much calmer at night and is sleeping better. I only do this in the evening to help prepare for bedtime. I really think it is making a difference.

Well I think when you start cereal this young it starts more problems while only solving the one problem. She'll have a full tummy but probably tummy aches and gas as well because her tummy just isn't ready to digest food.

Perhaps your ped will have some other suggestions for you! Good luck!

  • I don't see what the big deal is. We do a diaper change before feeding and if DS thinks we're moving too slow he lets us know it. I don't equate it with him not eating enough, they have no other way to communicate and some of them communicate louder than others.

DD wore the same outfit for Thanksgiving:

I understand this, but she never used to do this before.  And I'm not talking about just a loud cry.  I mean red-faced, teary eyed, hyperventilating, blood curdling SCREAM.  And she only does that at the 2 1/2-3 hour mark when I know it's about time for her to eat.

Yes, DS gets the same way. He gets so worked up he won't latch and I have to calm him down so he can eat. Today I had to latch him standing next to the kitchen sink (because he likes the sound of the water and it distracted him for a moment).

I just equate it more to a personality trait than an issue with food. Especially since the length of time between feedings is not even short.

  • O did it until we got our system worked out. I can tell when he's getting hungry and so he doesn't all out scream anymore, no cereal necessary. It also helps that he seems to understand somewhat that food will come even if I don't get to it right away.

I try so hard to get it as soon as I know she's getting hungry.  Lately, she has started chewing on her hand when she's hungry. So as soon as I see that, I start making a bottle.  Sometimes I get it fast enough, but most of the time she is screaming before it is ready.

I have even resorted to microwaving it to speed things up so she won't get so upset.

I wish she would understand that the food is coming, but even seeing the bottle just seems to piss her off even more!  LOL!
