Placenta encapsulation anyone?

I have heard about women eating their placenta after birth and that totally makes me squeamish! Anyone see that episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians?! LOL
Anywho, I just read about having your placenta dried and put into capsules that you can take. Has anyone heard of or looked into this, considered doing it? Or has anyone actually eaten their placenta or had the capsules before? I haven't done much research on it yet but I do know there is someone in my area that is certified to do it. I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this and see if it really is beneficial? It still kind of weirds me out but I might be able to handle the pills!

Re: Placenta encapsulation anyone?

  • I know a woman who did it, she struggled with postpartum depression after her first and wanted to try it out with her Second. She said that honestly she couldn't tell any significant changes from taking them and still had postpartum depression just not as bad. That's as much as
I know, but I'd do more research and if it seems beneficial than why not?

I probably won't have time with my twins placenta not sure how that whole thing works after hospital delivery but maybe with a single delivery I'd consider it. Hopefully someone has more info than me :)

  • I'm doing it. Plan on doing it all myself as well.
  • I considered it with DD, but ended up not. The thought grosses me out, but the health benefits are undeniable... in the end it was the cost that really turned us off. Way too expensive, at least here it is.

  • I'm doing it, for sure.

  • I've been considering it. I don't know if we will have the extra $250 ish for it so I may do it myself. It doesn't seem too complicated.
  • I think the concept of consuming the placenta is great. However, I read about the encapsulation process and its very...well ... processed. It is not yet well understood what exactly is in the placenta that helps your body, but I believe the encapsulation process significantly alters the molecular makeup and nutritional value. It's probably better to encapsulate than nothing, but likely not similar to consuming the raw placenta. That said, I'm not going to grab a steak knife and dig in. I'm just trying to decide if there's another way I can mask the real deal and reap more benefits.
  • I'm looking into it more. I'm interested because I struggled with PPD after both my kids so I'd like to do whatever I can to try and prevent it.

I know of some people that have blended it and put it in fruit smoothies/shakes. I would look into it :) maybe there are some good recipes?
  • I'm thinking about it, it's costs $250 here on oahu. The organization comes to the hospital and gets your placent right after delivery and they encapsulate it within 24 hours and return it to the hospital, to you.

I run a high risk of post partum depression because of my mood disorder, so I'll take every organic piece of help I can get!

  • I don't live in a major city but would like to encapsulate. The closet big city would probably be Dallas. Any suggestions?

  • I am trying to look I to this but haven't actually heard any first hand stories on it which makes me cautious. I feel like all the "research" I have seen is more speculation of how it's SHOULD work. I am really interested in hearing first hand stories.

If someone has anything to add or corrections to my statement please let me know! I'd love for this to be an option for me but if I am spending almost $300 I just need more info.

In Michigan there are people that do it and will travel. The first 200 miles to come to you is free. They charge $200. Research your area and state. I don't feel it looks that complicated, I'm going to give it a go myself.

    Try this website

It's a directory of people/places in Texas that do it. It's where I found my area!
