When to register? (and Canadians - where to register?)

Alot of people are already asking us "so what do you need for the baby?" etc. etc. etc. and with Christmas around the corner, everyone wants to get us gifts for the baby - which is super thoughtful and we're very thankful for the help.

When are you doing your baby registry, if you are doing one?

For the Canadian gals on the board - other than Babies R Us and The Bay, where would you register? DH jsut assumed that we'd register at The Bay, but I think I would just want the BRU registry and leave it at that.

Re: When to register? (and Canadians - where to register?)

  • canadian checking in here..

We only registered at Babies R Us and I did the whole thing online.  I was about 26 weeks when we registered, since that's when my shower invites were going out.

  • I would wait until after you have your big ultrasound, if you are finding out the sex at least. Other than that, I would just make sure you have it done before any type of shower invites go out.

It seems kinda odd to me that people would want to start buying you stuff for the baby for Christmas, but maybe that's just me.

    1) your siggy pic is friggin cute!

    2) yeah I thought it was weird too....but everyone seems to be on the Baby Train right now, and it's the first grandchild for both of our sides, and great grand child on DH's side. So everyone is very excited!

  • DH asked me about when we were going to register and have the baby shower.  I told him probably in May, which is about 6 months. He said that is to long to wait because then we have still have to go out and buy the other stuff we don't get.  Isn't 6 months about right though?

I agree. We waited until we knew the sex of the baby and it made registering so easy.

One word of advice is to lie about your due date when you do register. Most stores send out a completion coupon a week or so before you are due so that you can purchase anything you didn't get on your registry. It is much more helpful to have the coupon a few months or weeks early than to wait until the last minute.

  • Hi Shan!

I registered for DS the day of the big u/s.  DH and I made a whole day of it... wehad the u/s in the morning, then went and registered, then went out to lunch.  It was wonderfulness.

We plan to do the same this time =)  (Though, instead of registering, it will be finishing our xmas shopping since our big u/s is 12/23!!!)

I never would have thought of that! thank you!

6 months or so is good for a shower, even 7. But some good advice, don't plan it anywhere near the month or so before your due date! You may go early (I know quite a few people who didn't make it to their shower! :) or you just may be so darn uncomfortable by then, it won't be as enjoyable. Plus like pp said, you do want some time to go out and get the other things you need that people didn't buy you! :)

  • I have no idea.  We'll probably register at BRU when there's an upcomming shower or something.  We don't need much baby furniture since SIL is giving us lots of stuff.  Though we need to either buy a new crib or get the kit to fix the Storkcraft one SIL has.
  • I already stared at BRU, even though I'm not even planning to have a shower this time around.  It's more for me to keep track of what we need.  We've already started stocking up and with a registry in place I can just print it whenever I go to the store and get something and mark it off, then closer to the end if someone wants to get a gift, it will be something we really need that we haven't gotten around to getting yet.
  • With my first I registered at BRU only.  A friend registered at the bay and had nothing but problems.  Plus, BRU had a MUCH better selection, the bay just had a small department unless you wanted to order from their catalouge.

I had my shower at 35 weeks.  I was a little disappointed that it was so close to my due date at first, but it turns out that I hade PLENTY of time to go out and get anything that I still needed.

  • We are doing BRU and Target mostly because Target has the car seat I want.  My sister recommended registering soon because people have shopping on the brain.  I got it started online with BRU over the weekend but only have diapers on there.  Everything else was too much of a decision for me.  Even the wipes.  I registered for my frequest shopper number (at my sister's insistance) and wanted to be sure my name and number were linked for if anyone bought anything.  I am waiting more to see what we get for hand-me-downs than to find out the sex (I don't think we will find out...).  But ultimately if we get duplicates, it will be easy to exchange for something we need, worst case diapers.

  • now you all have me wanting to waste the next hour doing a BRU online registry!
  • I started our registry already, mostly because I don't think I will have an actual shower, all of my friends and family are in Oregon and we live in Arizona and so far I only have one real friend here outside of work and I work with all guys.  I was going to do BRU, but then my DH suggested Amazon, so that's what I did.  We went to Buy Buy Baby this weekend and found some non-gender specific stuff and I also found the bedding and stuff I want if we have a girl and I was able to find it all on Amazon.
