BFing dilemma: WWYD?

Ben is 8 months and has a milk allergy, so I've been BFing dairy free for 7.5 months.  I planned to go to 12 months, but I'm having some issues and am not sure what to do.  I have been getting TONS (like 2 a week) of migraines.  A couple have been so bad I've wound up in the ER.  Obviously I cannot take care of my kids when I'm that incapacitated.  So, I've been taking my migraine meds which are "probably" safe for BFing.  I don't like taking them, but I don't have a choice.  I hate that Ben is exposed to so much of them, even thought in theory it is "safe."

I'd seriously consider quitting and putting him on Nutramigen, but he won't take it, or a bottle.  I was in the hospital for 2 days and he didn't drink a single bottle that whole time.  I don't know if he's too old at this point to be fooled into drinking that nasty tasting stuff.

WWYD?  Continue to BF and have him exposed to medicines, or really push the formula?  I hate to even consider formula (EBFed Kate until 14.5 months...not that there is anything wrong with formula, it just was/is  important to me to BF, and I hate that I did it with my first and am considering quitting with my second).  Thanks.

  • What does Hale say about the med?

    you can search here:  https://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi?pg=topics&access=guest

if he said it was safe then I'd continue to BF for sure.

  • Ugh. What kind of meds are you taking? Are they triptans? Or narcotics?

Having suffered through migraines for about 25 years now, I know it's not exactly ideal to just try different meds. When you have something that works, you really don't want to mess with it.

I'd be hesitant to keep BFing and taking meds they're not sure about, too. If you can't find a definitive answer that says they're fine I'd personally go to formula. JMO.

I agree 100000% with this.  The whole point of BFig is that it's better for the baby, but if your milk w/ meds is not better than hypoallergenic formula, you should go with the formula.  GL :)
