Strollers - side by side or tandem?

Sorry, I'm sure this gets asked pretty often, but I scrolled through a few pages and couldn't find any posts on it.  For those that already have their twins, would you recommend the side by side or tandem strollers?  I've heard tandem are easier to fit through doorways but may be harder to get up curbs.  Just wanted to get some feedback before picking one out.  Thanks!

  • You'll probably end up with both. But to start, we had a Graco Tandem. We got an SBS when the girls were about 15m old.

  • Honestly, I say get both if you have the money and space to store both of them, buy/register for both. We bought a Graco Duo Glider that their seats fit into, the stroller stays in the car. I have a harder time getting it up curbs, but I'm 5'2", DH is 6'1" and has no problem popping it up curbs. It comes in handy when we are out on the town and running into stores, it doesn't take up any more space than a single stroller, width wise. I haven't tried the side by side out in a store, we use it for walks or if we are at an outdoor event. I will say that we didn't start using the side by side until around 2.5 months when they had better head control. But I like the side by side because the kids can look around and see everything, where as when we use the tandem, they are in their carseats and can't see much. Make sure you get one that has the 5 point harness and not just the lap belt, that way you can use it sooner.

  • Get a double snap n go for use with carriers, they are the best. Then I love my side by side I used for park trips and longer walks and now it's my everyday stroller since the boys aren't in infant seats to use with the double snap n go. I love our Baby Jogger city mini double. Photo in siggy.
  • Also never had our side by side not fit through any doorway yet!
  • i agree- both!

you can start off with a DSNG and use the infant seats - makes life easy... or my dream stroller- the City Select that comes out in the next month :)

  • This is ours:
Combi Cosmo EX Stroller - Wasabi

It doesn't fit our infant seats but does fully recline so we use it even now.  It is lightweight and works great.  We really just didn't want to spend the money on 2.

  • You're likely to want a couple different strollers depending on what you're doing to be doing.  We have three double strollers--DSNG, a Combi SBS (got it used at a multiples consignment sale), and a Phil and Ted's Sport.

Definitely go with the Double snap n Go.  It's lightweight, easy to fold, and has a great basket.  I'm going to be very sad when I have to retire mine. :-(

Honestly, I was upset when I got my Phil and Ted's (it was a gift) because I wanted a SBS and it is essentially a tandem.  However, I've definitely changed my tune because it has a lot of the benefits of both.  I love it because it's essentially the size of a single stoller.  That will make it handy in malls and such and it's even been great in such places at the indoor buildings at the botanical garden because it would be really tricky to get a SBS on the paths (particularly if there is anyone else there!).  It also has air filled tires which makes it a nice ride and easy to go up and down curbs and such.  It has a decent basket too.  The sun shade isn't the greatest, the stoller is a little difficult to fold, and we couldn't really start using it until the girls were 6 months old.  However, the size and maneuverability make up for those things for me.  DDs don't seem to mind sitting in the back seat and just kind of wind up chillin' back there.  Oftentimes, if we're doing a long walk or at the zoo, we'll wind up switching who is in front and back.

The Combi has it's benefits too.  I love that it's super easy to fold and unfold.  It has a ton of wheels, so it's not the greatest for uneven terrain, but I will probably use it more for trips into daycare and places like Target when I have to retire the DSNG.  The baskets aren't terribly useful (I can't put my diaper bag in them), although I probably could put stuff for a Target run in them.  I've also used this as a "sitting area" when we've been traveling and a makeshift set of high chairs.  It's just not that stroller I'd pull out for walks or probably even going to the mall.

  • Both!!!! You are going to want one of each depending on the circumstances. I actually have a side by side umbrella, a tandem graco and two single umbrellas and I use them all!!!
