See my book says that that is the muscle that depresses the tounge. The options I have that relate to the hyoid bone are: Digastic, Stylohyoid, Mylohyiod, Geniohyoid, Sternohyiod, Sternothyroid, Omohyoid, and Thyrohyoid... but none of them say that it manipulates it. They all say that it just moves it around.
The digastric muscle has two bellies, as the name implies. One belly extends from the chin to the hyoid bone, and the other continues from the hyoid bone to the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. Depending on which belly contracts and whether fixator muscles are stabilizing the position of the hyoid bone, the digastric muscle can open the mouth by depressing the mandible, or it can elevate the larynx by raising the hyoid bone.
the belly of the digastric is something I not so fondly remember from my A&P class. The professor who taught (using that term very loosely) that class keeps popping into my head with all of those muscles and cartilages.
Re: Does anyone happen to know...
yeah technically I think it does control the sides of the tongue....hmmmmm
maybe digastic

UGH, I don't miss Anatomy at ALL!
You've just taken me back 8 years. Are you going to school to be a speech path?

Good Luck!
Haha I know - I keep thinking when will I ever need to know this one. Oh well maybe one day I can help someone out too with that question!
What did you get your degree in?
