Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone have hair loss after BCP or due to anemia?

I've been off BCP for about 3 months now and have noticed that I'm shedding like crazy - way more than normal. I'm a little concerned about anemia since the hair loss also happened in college and it turned out I was anemic. Plus, I have a ringing in my ears and I did some research and read anemia is a possible cause.

I also read that hair loss can happen after BCP due to the hormonal changes. I'm definitely going to make an appointment with my doctor but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Re: Anyone have hair loss after BCP or due to anemia?

  • I'm borderline anemic.  I take iron to counteract it though, so I don't know if I'd lose hair without the iron.  I did lose it the last couple of weeks before our wedding and the doctor said it was just stress.  It was so much more than normal that I didn't really believe her, but she was right.  It stopped a couple days before the wedding when everything was finally done.  When I went off BCP (after 18 years) I had a ton of side effects, but that was not one of them.

  • I have also been losing my hair like crazy since going off BCP in July and I also have a history of anemia.  I went to my doc. back in Oct. and she checked my blood levels and said I wasn't anemic.  I am getting testing for PCOS next cycle if this one is over 40 days again and I have read this can also be a sign of that...

  • Im anemic and didnt know that it could cause hair loss.  Do you take iron pills for the anemia?  I take iron pills on and off everyday plus my pnv have iron in it.

Where in nyc are you im in Brooklyn.

  • My mother and I have been anemic on and off for years.  Usually I take an iron supplement everyday, but now I just take my prenatals and I have been fine.  Check with your doctor, but I would take prenatals if you haven't started them already.

  • I've been off BCP for 3 months now, too, and recently I did notice that I've been losing a lot of hair.  I didn't even think it could possibly be due to stopping BCP, but now that you mentioned it, you've got me wondering.  Maybe I should talk to my doctor if it continues...

  • Are you taking PNVs? My iron count is always low, but since I've started taking PNVs its gone up and I don't "shed" as much. I actually think that its making my hair a bit thicker.
  • YES!  My hair fell out like crazy for about 3-4 months after I went off the pill earlier this year.  It was insane - I would have to pull huge clumps of hair out of the shower.  But my hair didn't seem to get any thinner, so either it was growing back as fast as it was falling out or the prenatals I had started taking at the same time helped counteract it.

I have also been anemic in the past, but had bloodtests done and I was fine.  It's just due to the hormonal changes.  (the same way your hair falls out after giving birth)

  • I took my last BC pill almost 2 months ago, and the only differences I've noticed are painful AF cramps and chin break-outs.  I always shed like a dog, so who knows if that has increased!  Aren't hormones fun??  Stick out tongue

  • Wow...I would have never associated my hair loss to getting off BCP.  I've always shed quite a bit...but recently I've got clumps of hair....Its not getting any thinner, but by the end of my shower, I have to take out a huge clump of hair to drain the water.

Oh, and I have been off BCP since Mid August!

  • Thanks for the input ladies! Sorry for the post and run yesterday...DH's grandparents showed up. I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow. If I didn't have the obnoxious ringing in my ears I wouldn't be so frustrated by it!

I did read about the hair loss coming off BCP on WebMD (which I usually try to avoid, but I caved this time and I'm glad I did.)

Please let me know what the doctor says!
