Re:Reuse crib

My SIL wants us to have a crib that she used for her grandson who is 5.  She has stored it in their garage and said that she would sand it all down and refinish it for us.  I haven't seen this crib actually put together or anything so I am not sure how sturdy it is or anything.  My DH said that when her grandson was using it everything was fine.  WWYD, take it or pass?

Re: Re:Reuse crib

  • I'd pass, my mom offered to give me the crib I slept in, I would rather just get a new one that you and your hubby want together!

  • I would pass as well.  My mom wanted me to use an old cradle for my DD. The thing was 40 years old, never refinished and the piece that kept it from rocking was missing. Also, since it ws so old, there is no bedding that fits it properly and the bumpers were all over the place and the sheets didnt fit!!!  I didnt think it was safe and I refused to use it. My other brothers and sisters used it for all of their kids and I think she was insulted. I didn't care. Safety first!

  • If it meets current safety standards, I'd take it. I'm all for saving money.

FWIW, our LO will have to sleep in our room for a while, as we only have the one bedroom. So I don't really care if the crib, changing table etc... match because it isn't a nursery.

This. If it's safe, and we can fix up a bit (repaint, etc), I'd probably take it. I am all about saving money, and I know that we'd be spending a ton of money since we have NO baby stuff, so we'd be starting from scratch.

Same here. I got one off of our local Freecycle and it's great. Just measure everything, make sure it wasn't recalled and when you refinish everything it'll be good.

  • I would take it. Our little one is going to be sleeping in the cradle my husband slept in 32 years ago.  Smile

In fact, almost all of our baby items are going to be secondhand from our family or from thrift shops.  Our whole house is full of funky vintage stuff--and DH just bought me a great antique rocking chair for my birthday.  Love it.

HOWEVER, with all that said, I am getting secondhand and vintage baby gear because I love that kind of thing, not because I felt obligated from family.  So at the end of the day, you gotta do what makes you happy!  And if that means picking out a crib with your DH, then you should go for it.

I'd take it.  We're going ot be using the crib that my sister and I both slept in as babies (my sister is going to be 30 when my LO is born), and two cousins of ours also used the crib.  I'd rather worry about other things that I need that are more functional to us as parents (car seat/travel system, pack and play since I will be traveling a lot, and things that will get a lot of every day use and would annoy me if they weren't up to my standards, a crib just sits there, this way we can spend more on other things, apperance isn't what I care about right now, finding the stuff I need for cheap and low-cost is ideal).

If your SIL is willing ot sand it down and refinish it for you, you can pick a finish that would match the furniture that you want for your nursery if you're worried about how it will look.  However, if it irks you, do what you feel in your heart will make you and DH happiest.  Your LO will not care where s/he sleeps, just make sure it meeds safety standards (measure it) and get a new crib mattress for it and I think it'd be fine if you don't mind using it :)

  • our first crib was a hand me down from a little girl that's now 6.  that said, if they'd offer it today i wouldn't take it b/c i think it has a pull down side and pretty much all those are being recalled.  i'll keep using it (it's at my parent's house down the block) b/c we've been using it for over 4 yrs w/ no problems.  but you just need to be aware of new standards.

I agree.  We have friends of ours that has a bassinet for us.  I haven't seen it but my first thought is "woo hoo, we don't have to spend money on this!"  So long it's in good condition and is safe, we will take it.

No shame in buying new, though.
