I know it as meaning the third. But we have friends that named their child Treyce. And he is called Trey. While in the womb they called him trace element so Trace/Treyce stuck.

I have heard it as a nickname for a third (you know John Michael III or whatever.)
I have also heard it just on its own.
This is how I have heard it used. I also have a Treyton in my summer program. As far as I know, he doesn't go by Trey, but it would work.
