Should I buy maternity winter coat or too early?

I am 12 weeks and just saw a great deal on a cute maternity coat. It is our first baby so I dont know if it is worthwhile getting a maternity jacket if I wont be showing for another 3 months and then winter will be over. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Honestly, you probably won't even need it this winter..... Does your regular winter coat still fit you?    Is it already really snug or is there a bit of room in it?

  • I struggled with this too.  I ended up buying this coat (clicky) which isn't maternity but because of the way it is cut it will work with a bump as well.
  • I bought one from Old Navy last year that will work even if I have a bump.  A co-worker of mine bought the same one and even when she was 7 months, she could still wear it, but just buttoned the top button.
  • With DD I was due May 31 so pretty much the same seasons pregnant as you and I didn't get a maternity coat and I was living in NYC. When I could no longer button my regular coat (a regular wool peacoat type) I would just always have a sweater and scarf on. I could always button the top buttons. I don't think it's worth the investment. Also, when you are really pregnant, you stay quite warm naturally!

  • You probably won't need one.  That said, I had a winter baby last time around, so I did get a maternity coat and LOVE LOVE LOVE the one that I got:  https://www.japaneseweekend.com/mamacoat-trade-p/05-7036-082blk-maternity-coats.htm.  Yest, it's pricey, but (a) you can find it on sale in various places, and (b) I wore it ALL THE TIME while pregnant and while carrying DS around after having him, and now I still wear it around (in fact, I just wore it to work today and I don't even HAVE a bump).  The two different inserts are KEY.  Bottom line:  awesome coat!
  • Last time I was due in February and I used my non maternity coat the whole winter, But we lived where there were mild winters. Depending on where you live I think it would be a waste of money
  • I would save your $$.  You probably won't need a maternity coat.  Unless it's too cute and you just have to have it!!
  • My regular coat fit fine until about 30 weeks. I would save your money.

  • Thanks for posting this Q. I am debating about whether I should get one myself, since I am due in July 2011.

  • I bought a maternity jacket a few weeks ago. I live in MA so we get bad winters too! I'm almost 12 weeks - due in June. I got one that I can wear after baby too that doesn't look too maternity-like. Its one of those things you can probably do without if you really can't afford it, but is also nice to have if you can. I say go for it! When its cold out you'll be happy you have a jacket that you feel comfortable in :)

I bought a cute one from Gap Maternity and now of course its half off. Oh well.?https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=53009&vid=1&pid=664233&scid=664233012?
