Well, a rather dramatic labor story led to the very early delivery of our sons on Saturday morning, at 26 weeks gestation.
I was having some lower back and abdominal cramping very early on Saturday, around 2:30am, but passed it off to gas and constipation. At 7:30am, my water broke and we realized that I would not make it to the high risk hospital I had been going to throughout my pregnancy. We rushed to the local hospital and I was already unable to stop my body from pushing on the way there.
We arrived into the L&R Triage at around 7:50. Twin A's water was bulging (it was Twin B's water that broke earlier).. they broke his water and I delivered Hunter William at 9:00am sharp. His brother Parker Lee followed at 9:03am. They were 1lb 12oz and 1lb 15oz respectively.
My local hospital has only a level II NICU, and so the boys were transferred to the high risk hospital I should have delivered at. I had a D&C to remove some remnants of placenta from my uterus, and was discharged Sunday morning around 11:30am.
Although both boys started off responding really well in the NICU, we found out on Monday that head ultrasounds revealed both had bled into their brains. Parker's bleed was a lot more significant than Hunter's, and indicated that if he survived, he would either be in a vegetative state or need 24/7 assistance to survive. Hunter's outlook isn't as grim, but his bleed still indicates that he might have some challenges ahead.
At five days old, we held Parker as he passed away peacefully. We are completely devastated losing him, but our hope for Hunter makes all of this slightly easier to bear. Bar none, this is the hardest thing that either of us has ever had to go through.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, and please think good things for Hunter. He's been doing so well, and I only pray that it continues.
