Would you drink a venti coffe while PG?

I know nothing about coffee...I couldn't even make a cup to save my life.  A friend of mine is about halfway through pregnancy and asked me who my doctor is b/c she wants to switch.  I asked if everything was ok and she said yes but didn't like things her doctor had said/done.  One thing was that her doctor said it's ok to drink a venti size coffee.  Now my own doctor said caffeine is fine in moderation...but I've never asked about an amount.

I read online that a venti is 20 oz?  So is that crazy that her doctor said it's ok?

  • That seems excessive to me. But I was very conservative with what I ate and drank.

  • I would only do a small cup every now and then. Even my friend who lurves her coffee cut down drastically. It has much more caffine than soda.
  • i got venti cinnamon dolce lattes like 3 times a week.  oddly enough, caffeine in my BM has absolutely NO effect on DD or DS.  coincidence?  or tolerence?  Wink
  • I wouldn't drink one everyday but once it a while wouldn't hurt. I limited my intake so I wouldn't get a venti but I def. wouldn't switch drs over it.
  • I wouldn't switch doctor's over it, but to each their own!

I occasionally drink a cup of decaf, which is not completely caffeine free, but it certainly has less caffeine in it than regular coffee.  DH gives me a hard time and reminds me of the procedure for decaffeinating coffee - formaldehyde.  And occasionally when I am out to eat I will still order a sweet tea.  My doctor suggests no more than 1 cup of coffee or soda a day.

  • Does her doc know how big a venti is? Maybe he needs to hop over to Starbucks!

My doc said a cup a day is fine. I never asked about the size - just had 1 average size cup a day.

  • I cut out all caffeine with the exception of chocolate, so to me a venti coffee is excessive.
  • your friend wants to switch doctors because she disagrees with him about coffee. why doesn't she just not drink the coffee if she disagrees.

2 tylenol have more caffeine than most mochas from starbucks.

  • My doctor says no more than 300mg a day.  Based on some caffeine "guesstimates" of Starbucks, a venti brewed coffee has about 400mg of caffeine.  However, if she's getting a latte or something made with espresso instead, the caffeine content goes way down.

Can you tell I'm a coffee fan and had to look into this matter deeply?  :)

  • I don't know if I would switch doctors over it either, but I would not feel comfortable drinking that much coffee while pregnant.

Starbucks coffee is super strong and a venti is 20 oz - about 3 normal-sized cups of coffee, depending on how big your mug is.

A venti latte? Not so bad. Two shots of espresso is still less than 200mg caffeine. But Starbucks brewed coffee? That would - I think - put you over the 300mg daily that I have heard doctors recommend pregnant women stay below.?

Tylenol doesn't have caffeine in it. Excedrin does though.  But it also has asprin so you can't have that when pregnant.

Venti is big for a pregnant woman.  But it's a personal choice and your friedn shoudl do what she is comfortable with.  I was ok with a tall coffee and a soda some days, but I cut back, too.

  • ive heard that a tall coffee from SB has 500mg - the recc'd amount is to stay under 300mg from what I understood. I think SB is more caffinated than normal - but maybe im wrong.

    ?

  • I think it is crazy that the doctor said it was OK - not only is that a huge coffee, Starbucks also has more caffiene than other coffee brands.  Given that most doctors say less than 200mg, and it's been widely communicated in the media, I'd wonder about that doctor...  Maybe he thought venti means small?

  • Doesn't 300 mg = like 4 cokes?  IDK how many ventis that is ... but if it were a one time thing, it wouldn't bother me.  That being said, I drank a LOT of Dr. Pepper in my 1st and 2nd trimester ... so obviously I was not all that worried about it  :)

  • One doctor told me a glass of wine a day was ok, and obviously their stance on things like lunchmeat varied a lot, so that doesn't surprise me.

I think a lot of times we take this kind of research as truth when we really don't know. Better safe than sorry, so I don't think I'd do it myself, but I also wouldn't be too harsh on a doctor who believes otherwise.

same here.  I went as far as no caffeine til my 3rd trimester and then only 1 small cup at a time.

  • I drank a venti chai daily while pregnant. Other than DD's 3rd eye, she is fine!Wink

Seriously, I was fine the entire time. I even splurged and had a venti decaf skinny latte.

  • I drank coffee every day of my pregnancy (except for the 2 days I was in labor), but I was limited to 2 cups a day.  Anything less than 300 mg is ok'd.  A venti is way more than that.
  • My doctor said as long as it wasn't a Starbucks espresso drink, then I was good.

So I would get decaf instead on my espresso drinks!

  • No.  There's about 415 mg of caffiene in a regular venti coffee.  The recommendation is to not exceed 300 mg of caffiene per day.

  • I was a HUGE coffee drinker prior to pregnancy (still am), so I did a lot of research into this when I was pregnant.  I didn't drink that much coffee in the first trimester anyway, but started to have more on occasion during the second and third trimesters.  That said, my OB said you can have 300 mg per day.  Drip/brewed coffee has much more caffeine than espresso in a drink b/c the latter is mostly milk.  From the Starbucks website:

Starbucks Venti Caffe Latte w/ 2% milk - 150 mg

Starbucks Venti Coffee of the Week brewed coffee - 415 mg

I don't think a once in a while coffee drink would be harmful.  It sounds like there may be other issues with her doctor.

  • Yes I would and probably did.  I'm not sure if my travel mug was 16 or 20oz but I drank coffee in it almost everyday while I was PG.  Although probably at least 2-4 oz of it was milk.  The only time I didn't drink coffee was for about a week during first tri.  I don't know if it's related but that week I got such a horrible migraine that I went to Urgent Care where they gave me an anti-nausea and a shot of Morphine.  I'll take the caffeine over the pain and narcotics.

Plus my only true (physical) addiction is caffeine and I like it in the form of coffee.
