Hand sucking and drooling

DD has a new habit of sucking on her hands, but it is not suckling, it is full on SUCKING!!  She almost looks like she cannot get enough of them and this is after she has eaten ( I BF).  She has also started drooling alot too.  I know she is getting enough because she is steadliy gaining weight and has regular wet and poopy diapers.  I have given her the nuk when she starts in on her hands but don't want to start a nuk habit.  Anyone else's baby do this?  What do you do?

Re: Hand sucking and drooling

  • Mine does.  Not sure what you mean by "what do you do?"   .... I LET HER DO IT.  Whatever makes her happy. There is nothing wrong with letting your DD suck on her hand/fingers/fist ....  why replace it with a NUK ?   I'm confused.

  • DS loves to suck on his hand, and he started to go for his thumb so we started to give him a pacifier for his extra sucking.  He is not drooling much (yet), though.

  • Sounds like she is learning to self sooth and fulfill her sucking reflex.  This is a good thing!!!!!

And the drooling is fine too!
Our DD started drooling more as she started cooing- they drool trying to make new motions with their mouth.

  • Yep, DD has been doing that since birth. The nurse who was there for my delivery commented about how she must be a baby who really needs to suck a lot. She recommended we try to use a pacifier because that's easier to wean from then hand/thumb sucking, easier in the long run at least.

  • My DD does it like crazy, she loves to suck on her hands. She's also a drooling machine. I just let her do it.
  • Trent does it too, I figure if he isn't hungry and doesn't want his paci, let him do it. He's content and happy doing it.
  • Mady has also been doing this as of lately. We just let her go for it. It seems to be making her happy.

  • DS does this too. Sucking on the hands isnt a bad thing though, I'd prefer that over the paci.
  • Lucy does the same thing.  I really don't want to give her a pacifier and the couple time I caved and tried to giver her one she kept spitting them out.  I just let her eat her hands.  She's been blowing bubbles lately too.
  • Mine has been doing this lately as well.  It can be a little confusing because he seems to be furiously sucking and I worry that he is hungry.  I have tried to feed him when he does it and he is uninterested so I am starting to realize that it is just his new thing.  He won't take a pacifier so I figure if this soothes him I would let it go.

  • It's normal. They have figured out their hands which is a good thing. The drooling is completely normal as well. All our little ones are cooing/laughing and talking much more that their mouths are doing a lot more work and the excess saliva, they don't quite know what to do with it.

  • My DS does this as well.  We haven't given him a nuk either.  We just let him suck on his hand.  Figured we can deal with it when he is older if he becomes a thumb sucker.  I just want him happy.  And he can always find his hand to suck on, not so with a nuk.

THIS!  My pedi told us he wants babies to use a paci if they stuck their hands excessively.  A little is okay, but if they become thumb suckers it is MUCH harder to take a thumb away then to wean them from a paci later.  We planned to use a paci anyway but his point made a lot of sense to us.  We are all for self soothing though and he does still use his hands a bit, I want him to know they are there of course and sometimes his binky falls out during the night.

  • Gavin does this too. He seems so pleased with himself that he finally got his hands in his mouth....better than the crazy boxing fists going 90 miles an hr. It makes him happy so i let him do it.
