Baby Foods and Spice

About a year ago, DH and I watched a show about what babies around the world eat.  It was interesting to see how "American" it is do give your baby bland, spiceless food.  The show profiled different cultures and showed how early some introduce spice and heat to babies.

I was curious if any of the mamas here introduced their babies to ethnic food that was not the traditional pureed veggies and fruits.  DH has a secret goal to introduce our baby to exotic foods early so he/she is not a picky eater.  [Who knows how that plan will play out]

Of course there are some things allergy wise a baby shouldn't have, and the fact that adults can simply handle more spice due to the dying off of taste buds that naturally occurs...but I'm curious.

Re: Baby Foods and Spice

  • We've always seasoned Evie's food.  She eats Mexican, Greek, Italian, Thai, etc.  We started her on purees with seasonings like cinnamon, garlic, and onion powder.  At 9 months, we started feeding her table foods, and gave her what we were eating unless it was really hot.  My BFF did the same thing/  Her daughter is 4 and orders her own sushi when they go out to eat.  It's no guarantee of getting a good eater, but I think it helps to introduce a wide variety of food early on.

I heard a program on NPR that was similar to the t.v. show you described.  The woman on the show was a pediatrician and had developed a line of baby food.  I think it was called World Baby Food, and I believe it was available at Whole Foods.  You might look into it of you don't want to make your own.

  • I saw something like that too, but honestly if your child is going to be a picky eater they are from the beginning and spicy has nothing to do with it.  Cruz likes spicy thai food but is one of the pickiest eaters I have seen.  Tonight was a big event that he would eat ham lunch meat finally.  I have a couple friends that just puree whatever they had leftover from dinner the night before and that is what her baby got to eat instead of regular baby food, one is a super picky eater as a toddler now and the other isn't.  It really depends on the kid!

It's a pretty fun read and supports a local author!

  • I mainly cook Chinese food and that's what I serve my daughter.  She eats it chopped up in fine pieces and eats it with rice.  There are a ton of Chinese vegetables available at asian stores that you don't typically see at your average grocery store.  DD doesn't seem to mind any kind of food but I was never a picky eater too and she still bf.  I hear that's part of it, that if your child is bf then they will be able to taste the flavors of whatever you eat.  Not sure how true it is.
