So I mentioned in another post that my Step-Brother's two boys have the swine flu. We are supposed to be celebrating Thanksgiving with them at my Dad's. I am due in three weeks and my son has only had the first shot of the two they give. I told my Dad I was concerned and that I would check to see how everyone was doing before we made a decision about coming. He and my Step-Mom of course totally understand. Last I heard the kids were getting better. However, my OB told me that as long as someone has any symptoms they are contagious. She said you can't go by the fever. Anyways, would you play it safe and just stay home, regardless of how the kids were feeling, or would you go if they said they were fine? I feel terrible not going but don't want to take any chances.

I would skip it. Even if the kids are better, their parents were exposed and could be in that stage where they are contagious but not yet having symptoms.
My mom works L&D floor at Strong. Their policy right now is if you test positive for H1N1, you are not allowed to be in contact with your newborn. You can gown and glove up and pump and have that milk given to the baby. But you don't get to do skin to skin contact with the baby. I'm sure other hospitals have similar policies. But you could always call and ask.
We're having Thanksgiving at home (just the three of us) for this same reason. It stinks!...but we know it's the right thing to do.
Plus - even if the kids get better the parents may catch it but aren't showing symptoms yet.
First of all, I think that it is rude that the family would come to dinner knowing that members of their family are contagious. If I were your Dad, I would be asking the ill people to remain at home. I know that isn't fair to them but I don't think that the well people shoudn't be allowed to gather because of a few.
That being said, I wouldn't want to be around them either.
I totally agree with this. And even one step further...our neice and nephew go to daycare and school and they are not getting the vaccine because their ped said that it isn't any worse than the reg flu (yet they did get the regular flu shot) Ok, great...but that means your kids can bring it to the holiday gatherings and get me or any of the very little babies in the family sick.
