What is a Blighted Ovum?

Sorry if this seems like  a dumb question. Is it when no yolk sac develops or what?

Re: What is a Blighted Ovum?

  • Nothing develops basically. For me the gestational sac was the only thing present...

  • Don't feel like it is a stupid question, I actually just researched it myself, I didn't know either.  It is when a yolk sac does in fact form, but the embryo itself does not.  It is most likely due to chromosomal abnormalities.  Women will feel symptoms, and they will have HCG levels that read on tests bc the sac will give off the hormones.  I read that it can occur in up to 50% of all miscarriages.  Typically, the baby will spontaneously miscarry, but some women will chose to have a D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure.

Does that answer your question? :)

  • From American Pregnancy Association:

    What is a blighted ovum?

A blighted ovum (also known as ?anembryonic pregnancy?) happens when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterine wall, but the embryo does not develop. Cells develop to form the pregnancy sac, but not the embryo itself. A blighted ovum usually occurs within the first trimester before a woman knows she is pregnant. A high level of chromosome abnormalities usually causes a woman?s body to naturally miscarry.

  • When it happened to me, I basically had a totally normal pregnancy...except there was no embryo. My body held onto it for over 13 weeks.

    What she said...

Mine lasted 10 weeks. My Hcg went up from 85 to over 10,000 but never once doubled in the time period.

  • So if my ultra sound  showed a sac and a yolk sac then I  could still have one. Meaning  that until the baby forms a heartbeat if could still be a blighted ovum?
  • I think we need more information then this.

    How far along are you?

  • I am 6 weeks 3 day I had my first ultrasound last week there was a yolk sac and amniotic sac. The doctor said I was measuring a week behind but that it was nothing to worry about because I most likely ovulated late. I have another appointment next week he said we should be able to see the fetal pole and heartbeat by then.
  • To me it sounds like it was just too early...best wishes!
  • I had a blighted ovum in the spring and basically a gestational sac forms but is empty...no embryo ever forms, usually due to chromosomal abnormalities (that's what happened in my case at least).  However, your body still thinks you are pregnant and so you can have symptoms and your hcg can increase.  It is really deceiving and very heartbreaking.  I felt as though my body played a huge trick on me.  Luckily it was diagnosed early and I had a d&c.  I believe that if you have seen the yolk sac that that is a good sign and maybe your doctor is right, you just ovulated late...next week you will see more!  Good luck!
