Pregnant after 35

H1N1 hospital restrictions

My friend gave birth today at the same hospital I will be giving birth. She had her baby at 9:59 am today and they are sending her home tomorrow at 10!!They also said only immediate family is allowed and nobody under 18.

Is this common practice now? I was actually hoping to stay overnight for 48 hours just to get some rest!

Re: H1N1 hospital restrictions

  • Every hospital is different for both. My hospital you get a two night stay (stinks if you deliver late at night). Their policy for visitors is no one under 18, unless it is immediate family (then they have to be over 5). Plus all visitors are screened for flu like symptoms.

  • I just called today to ask.  Everyone over 18 is allowed during visiting hours; parents and grandparents allowed whenever; no children under 14 except for siblings.  This is their standard restrictions.  Nothing special for H1N1.
  • We have no adults with flu like symptoms, no one under 14.  My third cousin on my great uncle's side can come, but no siblings  :(    I keep hoping this is lifted before my delivery date!
  • Hmmm, I've never had vaginal delivery but that seems really soon to me.  I always thought it was 2 days.

  • I suspect that your hospital's rules aren't really related to the H1N1 hype.  Perhaps that's just the way they do things?

All of our local hospitals have a ban on all kids under age 18 or so, but the flu's been really bad around here.

Frankly, I'm fine with that.  Assorted relatives can wait a day or two to see the new arrival.  It does stink for siblings, tho, but I can live with it if it keeps babies from catching a nasty bug.

  • I'm not sure what the quicker stay would have to do with H1N1.  2 overnights is standard at my hospital - which can be less hours (if you deliver at 11:59 p.m.) or more hours (if you deliver at 12:01 a.m.)

For H1N1 no more than 2 visitors at a time, no kids under 12, no one with cough/cold/fever.

  • Ours is really strict right now- no one under 14 and only two visitors *total* for the entire stay. They issue each Mom two wrist bands and only those with the wrist band can come in...
