We have a mix of colored balls (some plain and some with glitter and more decorative), an ornament from all the places we've traveled too and I tend to pick up one or two that I like very year. I would do tinsil but I have young cats who would eat it. I do colored lights. You could also wrap your tree with garland.
If you're looking for an inexpensive way to decorate your tree this year you could go with plain balls (red, green, gold, silver you may even be able to find at a dollar store) and get a spool of ribbon and make bows. This way you can get a lot of decorations on clearance this season after Christmas and your tree would still look very beautiful this year.
I am on my phone but one tree is white lights with red and white ornaments and some Santa and snowmen. Another has colored and has homemade, hallmark, and other ornaments like that.

I unfortunately do not have any pics to show, but I can tell you we bought a silver/glittery star tree topper at Target, use silver garland, colored lights, and have a bunch of random ornaments. I like to have an eclectic tree.
Our tree always has a theme which can get kind of expensive but I buy the next year's Christmas decorations the day after Christmas when it's all on sale lol.
The last two years its been red and gold. I also like to match the wrapping of the gifts to the tree and have minimum stuff but lots of light. I'm weird like that.

Wow, what do you do with all the ornaments from previous years?
thanks ladies, it's def. a labor of love I have to buy a little each year to add to it because ornaments can get crazy expensive. I just started one year at a Christmas house that has tons of different ornaments and picked out some colors that I liked and went from there. WM and HL has a ton of cute things for cheaper than you can buy elsewhere. GL and have fun!
Wow, I'm surprised at how many people have theme trees. We just do colored lights, a special angel on top and ornaments that have special meaning to us. It's all sorts of different and interesting ornaments that we've collected over the years and some from our childhood. No color theme or anything like that.

I bought almost all of the ornaments & garland at Target after Christmas the year before, the tree topper is from Pottery Barn
I plan on doing more with it this year, last year we kind of put it together real quickly since I was still having around the clock morning sickness. For one of my wedding gifts, my mom boxed up all of my ornaments (I have one for pretty much every year of my life) and gave them to me so I will probably incorporate them somehow and maybe add some ribbon and a tree skirt as well
I don't have any pics, but ours is white lights, and then I wrap transparent red ribbon and that gold start garland around teh tree from top to bottom. The ornaments are all red and gold balls except for our "special ornaments" which stand out more against the coordinated ones. Also, we put candles on our tree.

I usually do 3 trees, but this year I'm doing the big one, the br tree and a half tree for ds (with just multi colored lights).
Here's the br tree:

Boxed and saved. I have a huge ornament box that I got from Wal-Mart. We typically do the same theme either two years in a row or every two years.
Here's ours:

Not the best picture but the only full-length one I could find. It's our dinky tree last year.. (and me about 2 mos pg!)
