Toddlers: 24 Months+

? for those who broke the binkie habit at 18+ months?

My is pretty attached to her binkie.  We try to limit it during the day and just use it at night and naptimes.  She has some medical issues so we have had a lot of doctor's appointments over the last 19 months and it has been helpful to have for those.  I know we need to break the habit at some point.  What age did you take it away?  Was it cold turkey?  How did it go?

  • We had limited to sleep times only.  We went cold turkey (didn't tell her or do any fancy preparation) and she asked for it once and I offered more snuggle time and that was it.  Hasn't asked for it since.

  • We had limited it to just sleeping and he actually had stoped using it during naps at his babysitters on his own. So then we just went cold turkey at home and he actually never asked for it.
  • We had limited to bedtime/naptime always. We took it away at 26 months cold turkey. We did talk about it though and we actually washed them all and he put them in a bag to give to his cousin that was 6 months old at the time and he gave them to him. He asked for it and cried for the first 3 nights then he still asked for it at night for a couple nights but didn't cry. After about a week he didn't even ask for it anymore.

  • He gave his to Santa - he left it on the fireplace on Christmas Eve. It worked beautifully. We gave him a tricycle from Santa for his paci. We told him only big boys can have bikes so now that he didn't have a paci he could have a bike.
