How long did it take for your LO to get back to birth weight?

LO weighed 7 lbs, 13 oz when born and at her 3 day appt was 7 lbs, 2 oz.  We did a couple follow up appts to check her weight and at the last appt, she was still only 7 lbs, 4 oz..  The pediatrician just advised me to start supplementing with formula  :(

  • It took us 2 weeks.  We had to supplement with formula because he was losing weight fast and was badly jaundiced.  We didn't want to but we figured, you gotta do what you gotta do.  Thriving is what's most important at that point.

  • She was ALMOST up to her birth weight again at the last weight check - which was a week and a half ago. I have to supplement with formula. Actually, it's more like she is on formula supplemented with breastmilk. I really don't make much.

    :(

I'm sorry - it's a crappy situation but it's not your fault. Just focus on giving her all the breastmilk you can and making sure she has a full tummy in any way that you can. You're doing the right thing. ((HUGS))

  • Same this happened to us.  My DS was 9 lbs 8 ounces when he was born, but was only 8 lbs 13 oz when we left the hospital.  A week after he was born he was only 8 lbs 14 oz.  She had us supplement with formula as well.  In 3 days he was back up to his birth weight ( This was his second week birthday) He definitely wasn't getting enough BM from me and needed some more food.  We just went to an appt on Friday and he is up to 12 lbs 5 ounces.  He'll be 6 weeks on Monday.

  • It took my LO about a week and a half to get back to her original birth weight.  Our pedi did not seem too concerned about the intial weight loss.
  • It took us about 2 weeks with severe jaundice (and being tongue-tied, she had surgery at 7 days to correct it) to get her birth weight back up. We did one formula bottle and decided it wasn't for us, so I pumped around the clock, made sure I was drinking enough water & taking in enough calories, and made sure she ate every 2 hours, 3 if she was sleeping.

  • Took almost a month. She had a two pound loss in the first week.
  • At his 2 week appointment yesterday he was still three ounces shy of his birth weight. I have to bring him back in Tuesday to have him checked again. LO has had a really hard time latching on since day one. So today I just started feeding him pumped milk out of a bottle and supplementing formula. I am already seeing a huge difference in his attitude now!

  • Jake took almost a month...8lbs at birth, 6lbs 15oz at 4 days, 7lbs 3 oz at 7 days, 14 days and 21 days.  No weight gain at all.  Then gained 19 oz between 21 and 28.  I had PP pre e and had to go on medication at 6 days, so we suspect if interfered with my milk quality.

  • It took DS about a week. He was 11lb6oz at birth and was back to that within one week. I did supplement the first three days until my milk came in because DS was so big that colostrum wasn't enough for him. I nurse on demand, and I have an oversupply of milk.

  • It took almost two weeks.  I did supplement with formula to get him back up, as it took a while for my milk to come in and increase in supply.
