Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

hcg level confusion-advice again please.

Hi again,

You ladies seem to know much more that the nurse at my OBs office.  :( So yesterday that told me my numbers did not double.  At the time I didnt ask what the #'s were because I was in shock.  She did tell me the first set of numbers was 300 something on Monday.  So they want me to get another blood test tomorrow (Sat).  So I went in to get a lab slip today and had questions. I asked what Wed #s were and she said 600 something but she would need to call me back with the exact numbers. She called 5 mins later and told me 650. I said well you told me Mondays were 300 something so that means it doubled?? she said hold on and came back and said she was wrong and wasnt sure why she gave me that number BUT they were 530 on Monday.  For a minute I had hope, but now it is replaced with "what if the dumb B-word (sorry, I am aggrevated) messed up".  She said "well tomorrows numbers will tell me more??" HUH?! I am soo confused. I mean how does one mess up numbers like that?!

Then I asked how long I have to wait to m/c naturally or if I could take a pill or something because I want this over with. She said she needed to talk to the Dr about my options and call me tonight. I then explained we have a trip planned, etc.  Again she needs to talk to the Dr.

I still have no signs of spotting and I dont have really any PG symptoms either (with DS I was vomitting already).  She never mentioned an u/s to confirm.  Please tell me what I should be demanding from them to make sure.  I have confidence in my Dr, just not her assistant.

  • It isn't fair that they can't be clear and you're in the state of confusion. I don't really know that much but can tell you what they told me...hCG numbers should/usually double every 48 hours. As you get further along into the pregnancy, they can take 72 - 96 hours to double, and eventually get to a point and stop doubling.

Check this link...this site helped me.

     Good luck. Hugs to you!!

  • Nurse did the exact same thing to me this last time. I have filed a complaint with the office, and they are looking into (actually looking into it, not just saying that, because I am pissed about it still).

Once you get the next numbers, you should be able to make more of a decision about where to go. The levels have to get over 1000 before they can do an u/s, and unless the numbers actually drop, the office should not do anything to cause the m/c. As long as they are going up, it is a wait and see until they can do an u/s.

I am very sorry you are dealing with all of this.

thank you, I did not know that about the u/s!  So I guess this will be a LONG weekend until I get the test results on Monday!

So do Dr's generally wait until the numbers stop or drop before they figure out what the next step is? So potentially "if" my numbers keep going up (even slowly) they make me wait and see? Oh my, this may be one drawn out journey. Days seem as long as weeks now. :(

The limbo is awful - but if the numbers are going steadily up, my understanding is they would want to make absolutly sure the pregnancy is not viable before stepping in. I'm sure that is what you would want too, even if just so you never wondered if there was a chance.

Be a pest and make your doc talk to you. You deserve answers and attention, and they should be there to give you all the information they can.

  • I'm so sorry this is going on.  It sucks to be in limbo.  All I can say is that if your numbers keep going up, they'll try and confirm viability with an u/s.  Once your numbers hit 2000 or around 5.5 weeks, they should be able to see something on the u/s.
