High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone have a succenturiate (lobed) placenta?

I saw my ob for a routine 20 week ultrasound yesterday and was told I have a succenturiate placenta. Basically, there is a separate smaller lobe of placenta attached to the main placenta with some blood vessels. He told me there is no real risk until deliver. Main risks at delivery are 1) hemorrhage if the vessels rupture 2) fetal distress 3) if a portion of the placenta is left inside, it could become infected. He said I was at higher risk for C-section. Based on what I've been reading, I think I might push for a scheduled C. Anyone have any experience with this? I'm a little freaked out about it!

Re: Anyone have a succenturiate (lobed) placenta?

  • I had this.  My doctor wasn't overly concerned about the extra lobe, but I think he knew a c-section was in my future because DD was stubbornly breech from 16 weeks on (I had a lot of monitoring because I had a PTL scare, was borderline GD, and then developed PIH).

I did have a c-section, but my daughter was still breech when they had to take her at 37w3d because of the PIH and because she was in some distress.  I don't know how my delivery would have been handled if I hadn't had those issues.

I was a little freaked out too and it seemed like no one else had even heard of such a thing.  But it all ended up being OK in the end.  Good luck with your pregnancy and delivery!

  • Are either of the placentas low lying?

I was diagnosed with the same thing around the same time as you.  Because of the position of my secondary lobe, there are more complications which is why I ask.

  • I had it too.  The main portion of the placenta was anterior with the extra lobe going posterior.  My ob wasn't at all concerned about it although I was.  I had a vaginal birth... no retained placenta, no excessive bleeding.  Good luck.
