Does anyone's 1 yr. old not like milk?

DS, who eats about anything, HATES milk.  He turns his head away, screams, and I'm going to start worrying about his calcium intake.

Anyone have any tips to get him to drink the stuff?  He doesn't have any adverse reactions...he just doesn't like it.

Re: Does anyone's 1 yr. old not like milk?

  • can you mix it with whatever he drank before and slowly increase the ratio of milk to the old product (formula)?

I still give my DD frozen BM b/c I have it but she only intakes about 10oz a day and that includes what she gets in her cereal.  I know she needs more but I can't make her drink if she doesn't want to.

I also give her a container of baby yogurt every day.

Can you add cheese, broccoli, other calcium-rich foods to his diet?

  • My son refuses to drink milk (he's 14 mos old).  I've tried it mixed w/breastmilk, at different temperatures, in different sippy cups, all to no avail.  I still try to give it to him several days a week and just hope that one day he will like it.  In the meantime, I give him lots of yogurt and cheese to ensure he gets enough calcium.
  • I mixed the milk with formula and slowly weened the formula. Now she drinks milk no problems. I also second feeding cheese and yogurt,
  • We started it mixed with formula and in a bottle before we moved to all milk and then sippy cups.  That was our progression but I don't think we had a problem with her not liking it.
  • Thanks! I've been trying the slow progression (adding it to formula), but then he won't drink the formula.  I have been giving him yogurt every day and some cheese.  I'm just baffled, since this kid will eat anything right now.

  • Kids do not have to drink milk.

C does not. I give her calcium rich foods (she loves broccoli and yogurt) and a daily vitamin.

I thought babies in their 2nd year of life needed to drink whole milk for the fat content, which is for brain development.

They get their fat content in other foods.

  • My 17 mo isn't a big milk drinker.  He will drink a little, maybe a 1/2 a sippy cup full the entire day.  Mostly just a few sips here and there.  Nowhere near the amount that's recommended.

We do full fat cheese, and full fat yogurt to get his calcium.  He loves cheese, so that's easy.  And, I mix plain yogurt with some canned peaches/pears or even sometimes just fruit puree, and that has worked for us.

Our pedi didn't seem too concerned, so I just let him drink the little bit of milk he does, and not push it.  A friend of mine has 3 girls, and NONE of them ever drank milk.  They all turned out fine, so I wouldn't worry too much.  Maybe just try and get his calcium through other sources, if you can.
