Why do MIL's have to be annoying????

I am now counting down the days until my MIL arrives. I should be counting the days until I meet my LO!!!  She is working my nerves already.

Example 1: She thinks we should drive to a rented beach house or hotel for a couple a of days to enjoy the family over Christmas. Um, no. My due date is Dec. 16th. Planned time at the beach Dec.22-26. Call me crazy, I am not going. Her response"we want to be at the beach for Christmas". My response: "You may visit us at home anytime you wish while you are on vacation at the beach, we are just an hour away". Yeah, I get the worst DIL award and I don't care.

Example 2: We have already planned a trip back to DH's hometown in February. I asked her to hold back a few of the 24 outfits she has for DC until we get there. This will save me packing space when we fly to see them. She said that she would prefer to just buy him all new things when we arrive. What!!! The kid has over 70 outfits in the 0-3 months size range. He doesn't need any more clothes. I would prefer you donate money to his 529 education fund instead of buying him more clothes. Her response " we will just have to change his outfit every couple of hours because he needs cute clothes". Seriously lady you are insane.

Example #3: Coming soon.

Re: Why do MIL's have to be annoying????

  • LOL!  It's something in their DNA, I believe.  My MIL would do EXACTLY the same thing re: clothes.

On the other hand, it's MY parents who are insisting we all rent a house in Miami for right after our LO arrives.  In their defense, though, DH will be down there in grad school, so they're just trying to help us have bonding time together as a new family.

(((hugs)))  If it helps, let her know that your doctor advises against traveling with the baby for the first month or two due to the increased risk of infection (especially if they're flying into FL).

  • Oh my!  Can't help you with the clothes DS had so much stuff in the 0-3 month that even if we changed him every couple hours like your MIL is suggesting we would have never gotten through it all.

She is just plain NUTS when it comes to Christmas does she not remember what it was like to be VERY pregnant and/or just had a baby?!?!

Time for your DH to intervene!

  • When you find out the answer to that question let me know!

I can't believe she would expect you to go to the beach that soon. I agree with you if she wants to see LO then come over and visit.

I have a whole bunch of examples about my MIL. The latest being you shouldn't take any drugs during labor at all. What about the baby? Really MIL??? I will do what I choose thanks! Annoying!

  • I had DS on Dec 16th.  Even going to my aunts, 20 mins away, was hard enough on X-mas.  Much less packing and going to the beach!  Oy.  I feel you on that.

I hope your DH is backing you up on that too- that HE is also telling his mom "Sorry- not going to work for us.  We'll be at home over x-mas.".

As far as the clothes go.... that isn't a hill you want to die on.  really, it isn't.  Just let her buy them.  Trying to rationalize how else you could use the money is pointless. it's HER money and seh can spend it however she wants.

I just counted DS's pants.  He has 8 pairs of jeans.  JEANS.  This doesn't include khaki's, cords, etc.  TOld my parents this.  Yesterday, they show up and my mom goes "I know you said he has a ton of jeans, but he doesn't have (as she pulls it out of the Macy's bag) BLACK jeans yet, does he?".

She just LOVES to buy him clothes.  90% of his wardrobe is from my parents!  WHile he truly doesn't need so many pants, it's just something she likes to do and I'm not going to take that away from her.

(And honestly- as uninvolved as my MIL is, I'd take buying TOO many clothes over hardly ever being around at all..... )

  • Ahhhh. Ok girls, I will not try and tackle to clothes issuse. I will put on my big girl panties and deal with it.

As far as the beach trip and DH backing me up (but I think he disagrees with me), this is how it all went down. She asked him if we were coming out to the beach for the week. His response "we haven't talked about that yet.". After he got off the phone with her I said, NO and gave my reasons. He told her we would be happy to try and join them for Christmas dinner but we did not want to make plans we may not be able to keep. Sooo they are staying closer to us for a few days and then they will go to the beach w/o us for a few days. I feel that he is being fair by respecting my wishes. I am still not looking forward to the visit but the big girl panties will be worn, again.
