Tag Jr and Leap Frog annoy me

Granted, I don't have one, and haven't played with someone else's.  My attitude is, it doesn't teach a kid to read, it cheats for them.  Why learn to read when you can point a stick at a word and it will read it for you?  Please explain why I might be wrong...

Re: Tag Jr and Leap Frog annoy me

  • I think he'll use it in the car. I also think it does sound effects- I suck at sound effects... it's just another way to get kids interested in books. Charlie is not one to sit down and let me read to him so I'll try anything!

  • I'm kinda with cha... Ava is soooo in love with reading books, I don't want some toy to take that from us.

She's even doing the "I know what page comes next" thing, and "reads" it to us. it's too cute.

  • ok....

So my kid LOVES to read... he brings us books all day long, which is totally cool... He has (and I am not exaggerating) more than 140 books (146 to be exact! lol)

I want this love to continue. He will learn to read in good time, by us reading to him, by word recognition, etc...  but I want him to continue to love books.  Tag Jr allows him to play independently (because I cannot read to him constantly!) yet still indulge. I think it will be fun extra activity, as long as one does not think it will help your kid to learn to read, or to replace reading with a parent. But for playtime, I think he will get a kick out of it.
The learning part for me is more about hand eye coordination, colors, shapes (it does that, too) and really that is just like an activity table or another learning toy. Do I expect his leapfrog table to teach him the abcs? of course not!! So I dont expect his tag to teach him to read! When you are 18 months old, it is all about repetition, not cheating, btw! : )

  • Ok, I like those answers!

I just hate the commercial that has a kid who says something like, "look Mom, I'm reading!" and the kid is definitely school age.

  • We are getting the girls Tag Jr for Christmas. They love books.  They will sit in the corner and "read" forever.  They have certain books they want read to them but they like looking on their own.  I figure this is another way to enhance their book time.  (and it looks fun haha)

  • It's more of a independence thing for me.  BTW, I have links to coupons if anyone wants them.  I got the Tag for 9.99.

Yes, please!  I'm waiting to buy anything until after Kira's birthday this weekend, just in case, and the other sale + coupon I saw will have (or likely already have) expired.  And book sales or coupons would be great too, LOL.  Thanks so much!!! :)

  • That was my exact same thought about them too. I guess the ladies bring up good points here, but I'm still not getting them for the boys yet. I roughy my little sister to read, I'm gonna teach my boys. Also, I want them to keep running up to me with books, they are so independent in so many ways. That is something they still need me for ;) besides, I love watching them pick up a book, and "read" it out loud. Looking at it upside down, using gibberish. So freaking cute :)

  • I'm with you on the tag system. Once they begin to read real words it's just a crutch.

With the Tag JR tool it's more of a book exploration thing though. We also have a Leapfrog Learning pad (or leappad) but it's being replaced by the tag jr. It's really neat because the kid can touch pictures in the book to hear different sound effects or like with the alphabet it says the letter when you touch it. Katen will sit there for a good 1/2 hour (which is amazing for her - she's a busy girl) flipping through a book over and over.

I see it as a good alternative to turning on the TV when I'm busy with baby #2. Again, the more advanced tag system isn't my favorite though.
