Kind of freaking out - longish

I emailed my doctor and am waiting for a reply (she is really good about same day responses)...but I am kind of freaking out in the mean time and hoping maybe someone can ease my stressout...

I have been closely tracking my weight during pregnancy because it has been such an up and down.  The doctors have changed a LOT about my lifestyle (hello 2500-2800 cal diet) and we finally saw progress in my weight gain.

I had stalled out at 12-13 lbs gained for about 5 weeks and then suddenly I jumped up to 15-16 lbs and that was much celebrated with my doctor and me (and DH too of course).  I was "finally on the right track."

Well today I weighed in and I have lost 3.75 lbs since last week.

I know MM is getting bigger, I can feel his little body...I can tell where his bum is and his feet and knees and arms...he frequently presses one of those parts out on my stomach and I get to feel the size of the body part...so he is getting big, which is great...and I know he is getting the nutrients he needs because the diet is not only high in fat but because it is also a GD diet it means I am really monitored and restricted in the kinds of foods I can eat.

But I am also selfishly concerned about me and my body and if I am getting enough nutrients.  Clearly I want MM to get everything he needs and I would gladly give up anything he needed to make sure he got what he needed, but even after he gets what he needs...am I getting what I need?  I feel like I can't possibly be with my losing weight...again.

I am so stressed out right now about all of this.  So if you have any words of wisdom or have been there and can share your experience...I could really use a talking down from the ledge moment.

  • maybe post on 3rd tri where you will likely get more responses & find someone in the same boat as you?? Id bet that there are others that had trouble gaining as well ...??
  • Hugs.  I hope you get positive feedback from your doctors.  If you've ever seen that "I didn't know I was pregnant" show, you'd know that lots of women, even women who are petite, don't gain a lot during pregnancy.  Heck, in the 50s, the recommended gain was 15-25 lbs total.  They would have been giving me total crap for the 42 lbs I gained with Ryan :)
  • I lost weight in the 3rd tri, about 5 pounds in one week with no explanation. Then I stopped gaining at all for a couple weeks. I had zero problems gaining weight with my pregnancy - I typically gained 1-2 pounds a week.

It's not uncommon to lose weight or stop gaining for a bit in the 3rd tri.

  • About to go apeshit....

I got a response...and she HAS to be mistaking me for another patient...

"Your weight gain appears normal, we prefer patients only gain 15-20lbs their entire pregnancy when they start out overweight."

In what world was I classified as overweight????  This is a picture of me the day I got my BFP!!!

So I emailed her back and said "I think you might be mistaking me for another patient, I have never in my life been overweight.  [stated height and weight prior to pg] I am an athlete and an avid workout goer. However, if you feel that the 3-4lbs weight loss is acceptable I will be fine with it, I just wanted to make sure that I was not doing anything wrong and that my baby and I are both healthy."

I know you've struggled with weight during this pregnancy and I know that's been hard - and I'm not a doctor (medicine is just a hobby for me) but I really do believe women's bodies have minds of their own when it comes to pregnancy and weight gain. Some will gain a ton, some will gain very little - but most of the time, with a normal pregnancy, regardless of the number on the scale it's just the weight that woman's body and baby needed. Try and have faith in that. If you feel fine, you're getting the nutrients you need. As long as baby's growth continues as it has been, all signs point to him getting everything he needs. I was on bedrest - no exercise, hell, barely any movement! - and I gained less than many women. I had a very unhealthy obsession with Twix bars but I didn't gain the kind of weight you'd think a person would gain that was on bedrest for 5 months that sucked down Twix bars like they were crack and barely glanced at a vegetable or piece of fruit. Hang in there and try not to stress.

  • I know it is hard not to be concerned or worried, but I am sure everything is fine....As you know, I didn't gain much at all during pregnancy and Lilly was 9.9lbs.

Somewhere around 30ish weeks, I lost 4 pounds in one week...I emailed the doctor and I went in for a growth ultrasound and Lilly was growing right on track...(they said she was going to be about 7-7.5 pounds)....and actually that she was measuring ahead....It is just that Lilly was getting everything....I was literally all baby...

I hope your doctor gets back to you soon, but in the meantime try and relax...even though I know it is hard!

ETA: I am sure you are getting enough nutrients as well...as long as you are taking a prenatal and eating a healthy diet...your body is made to do this and is very smart....I'm sure everything is A-OK!

  • So one thing I've gotten in the habit of doing is asking the doctor/nurse on the phone to confirm my birthday with me before proceeding with advice because once I got the shock of my life when I was suddenly diagnosed with something that I didn't have the symptoms for. Luckily, at the time, the doctor had the chart laying out flat and I noticed that while the name matched, none of the other information did. Crisis averted and lesson learned.

I remember the weight dip in the 30 week range. I also lost a few pounds too and got nervous but the ultrasound showed that everything was fine. So I'm thinking that it might be normal for that to happen. I agree with everyone else who said as long as you are eating and taking vitamins, you are probably fine. :)

Hang in there! You are doing a great job.

  • Like the PPs, I agree you should try not to stress - your body is doing what's right for you and your baby.  I also lost a few lbs in the last trimester - I stopped gaining weight completely probably around your time.  One week I think I lost  3-4 lbs!  My baby was 9.4 lbs at birth, so I was almost all baby too.

You're lucky that you haven't gained too much weight! Think that it will be a lot easier to lose it afterwards!  ;)
