There was a post the other day about someone's child having this. I tried to offer some advice on how we get our kids to eat a variety of food but now I am wondering if this is some type of illness. I honestly don't know and I am sorry if I offended anyone.
Thanks.
Re: What exactly is a food/texture aversion?
its like not liking slimy foods for example...they just cant stand that feeling in their mouth. Its a sensory thing that for some like my dd is also behavioral. It goes beyond being a picky eater.
this. And, don't worry, you didn't offend. It's just frustrating being a mom of a kid with sensory issues about food. Even the pediatrician doesn't get it. If I could make him eat what we do, I'd already have done it. KWIM?
No, you didn't offend at all! It's funny, whenever I get recommendations, it's always something that I've already tried and has failed! Here is an exerpt from her report. It's kinda technical but hopefully helps explain the difference:
Sandra has difficulty with oral sensory information. When children have difficulty with oral sensory processing, it means that this form of sensory input is either confusing, upsetting, or not meaningful to the child. In any case, difficulty with sensory input can interfere with the child's ability to successfully perform various activities.
Quadrant Summary: Sandra demonstrated a definite difference score in the Sensory Sensitivity quadrant, indicating that she has a low neurological threshold and has heightened awareness to stimuli as well limited habituation to these stimuli. This result would suggest that Sandra would benefit from organized input at mealtime and predictable patterns of movement, touch, visual and auditory cues at mealtime in order to create opportunity to challenge for new foods.
Sandra demonstrated a definite difference score in the Sensory Avoiding quadrant, indicating that she has a low neurological threshold and she will actively attempt to counteract this threshold. This may result in Sandra creating rituals to avoid sensory "surprises" or may result in emotional outbursts when she is overwhelmed.
