I believe it's your choice to do an actualy inspection (go to local fire department or hospital, they do it for free) but your seat has to be in right (the nurses will check) b/4 letting you put your LO in the seat to go home.
I suggest your local fire department, they will do it in a matter of minutes!
Its your choice but I would totally do one! We did it last week with the DH car and Im so happy we did because for some reason his car only has the car seat thingys on either side, not in the middle. We totally had it hooked up wrong!
Your choice, but if you are a new parent, it is helpful. And take all of your cars, so they can show you the best place in each car to install the seat.

I remember my husband giving me a hard time last time for having our seat installed at the Sheriff station. I insisted after my husband asked why it had to be installed facing back. :::rolling eyes::: So I took my big pregnant self to the sheriff station with my Chicco seat and the young yet certified sheriff installed it for me. He said it was the easiest seat he's ever installed. Then he told me how to unplug the latches if I ever needed to put it in another car. The entire thing was pointless for us seeing as he just said it goes from car to car. Although, he was yummy to look at. I guess not all seats are as easy to install.
The head sheriff told me over the phone to buy shelf liner to put under the seat so it doesn't slide or did into the seat. Just the rubbermaid stuff from Home Depot.
our fire station only does it once a month, and we just missed it this month. luckily we're having a home birth, so I don't have to worry about using the car seat for a while, hopefully the baby is born before this time next month! It seemed pretty easy to install though, we've got the latch system, two hooks, tighten it up, and we were done. It's not budging.
