Babies on the Brain

Mommy FAIL

Oisin was crying last night and I could not for the life of me figure out what the problem was.  He really only cries when he is hungry, so I gave him 4oz of formula, which he gluped down.  Then I gave him 5 oz of solids, since he was still crying.  I am trying to cook dinner and the poor kid is crying his heart out.  I thought it was from the teething, so I gave him a wee shot of Tylenol and he was all good.  D came home and he couldn't figure it out either, so he took him to put his pj's on.

Turned out the poor kid had a dirty diaper and now has diaper rash.  His wee bum was a bit red and now it's full on diaper rash.  It didn't smell at all until D took the diaper off.  This kid never cries when his diaper is dirty, so it never occured to us to check it.

FYI: this all took place over 1 hour, not all night, for the lurkers (read: haters) who think I would let my kid sit in a shiity diaper for hours.

Re: Mommy FAIL

  • Don't feel bad.  I'm sure everybody has done that at least once, myself included.

  • Aww, poor O. But you followed his normal signs, so don't beat yourself up over it. He will be fine :-)

  • The diaper is always the last thing I think to check, too, because it never seems to bother Henry.

Hope Oisin's bum is back to normal soon.

  • When I worked at the daycare that occasionally would happen at naptime.  Then they would wake up and I would feel awful.
  • Poor little guy? What are you putting on it? (Sorry if you've already answered, I'm posting from my phone and didn't scroll through the replies.) We use Butt Paste. He's never really had a rash, but if it starts to get a little red that's what we use. FWIW, that could have happened to me. Andrew never cries when his diaper is dirty.
  • We are using Desitin.  It usually clear up anything he has quickly.  I usually use it on his neck when his formula gets stuck in there.

I'm still trying to get over the "really only cries when he's hungry" part.  What a good kiddo!

It happens to the best of us.  One night I let K cry it out only to find out in the morning that she had a fever.  Talk about a Mommy FAIL.
