Weaning the swaddle?

Any suggestions of how to go about weaning Sara from her swaddle wrap while she sleeps at night?Originally this was the only way she would sleep on her own at night and it has been great, but now she wiggles out at least 1 arm and still stays asleep, but if I try to lay her down without she wakes up constantly. Any advice?

Re: Weaning the swaddle?

  • We use it but only on the lower half and leave Wesley's arms out.  We started this at 2 weeks after finding him twice with his arm out the neck hole of his PJ's.  Apparently he likes his arms out.  LOL  Maybe start with one arm (the one she tends to un-swaddle) and then add the other.

  • I thought we were going to have to get DS's college roommate to swaddle him.  At 5 months old we were doing CIO b/c he just would NOT go to sleep on his own.  After about 5 minutes of screaming, swaddled and on his back, he stopped.  We went in a few minutes later, and there he was on his stomach now busted out of the swaddle.  And, that was it, we didn't swaddle him again.  Don't know if that helps or not, but I guess she will tell you when she stops needing swaddling.  Sounds like she's almost there, but not quite.  Hope it works itself out soon. :-)

  • Wish I could offer advice, however my DD slept swaddled until 5 monthsEmbarrassed.

She slept so good while swaddled that I was afraid to jinx our routine. Eventually we went cold turkey.

  • For DD, we just kept making it a tiny bit more loose every night--she would break out of it, but she was old enough to understand that she wanted out of it, but just needed it a bit for comfort.  So she basically weaned herself off of it on her own by positioning her arms wherever she wanted them to be.

Oh, and btw, your baby is SO freakin cute!!

  • My pedi said that DD would let us know when she didn't need the swaddle anymore. I thought we'd have to stop once she was rolling over, but she said not to worry about it. It took until she was 10 months old!

I knew she was ready to sleep without it once she started breaking completely out and falling back asleep on her own without being re-swaddled. I agree with PP, your DD (what a cutie!) is probably almost to that point.

This, almost exactly. ?DS slept swaddled at night and for naps until he was 6 months. ?As soon as we took it away at night, he started tummy sleeping. ?He napped with it until 8 months. ?I took it away when I found him completely swaddled and laying on his tummy. ?Scared the sh*t out of me. ?We had to do Ferber for naps. ?He LOVED that swaddle.

Are you using the Miracle blanket? ?That was the only thing that worked for DS - he could get out of anything else. ?If you can find something that she won't wiggle out of, there's no reason you need to wean now.?

  • We don't swaddle Lawson anymore. He got really ticked starting last week being constricted and not able to move. He sleeps in his bouncer, so we have a blanket he sleeps on covering the bouncer, which I wrap around him under his armpits kind of like a swaddle, then cover his lower half with another blanket. DD didn't like the swaddle early on either, so not something I had to worry about.
