2nd Trimester

26 Week Appointment Shocker

I get there feeling great about the weight and just great in general (sciatic pain was at a minimum today). Stepped on the scale and BAM 149 pounds. Indifferent My jaw dropped. I voiced my concern to my midwife and she looked at my charts. I've gained 24 pounds and I'm only 26 weeks! WTF Angry I know that by looking at my siggy everyone is wondering where it is, but it's still a shocker and cannot be healthy that I'm going to gain another 15 pounds through out this pregnancy. That's 40 pounds all together!

I thought 20-30 was a normal weight gain for pregnancy... does anyone know what is the "normal" / "average"  weight gain is?

I'm going to waddle my heifer butt over to the pantry and eat some baked goldfish. Embarrassed

  • Awwww... While I think the average recommended weight gain is between 25 and 30 pounds, if you're on the lower end of the scale to begin with, you can usually afford to gain more. What did your midwife say? Did she seem concerned?

  • Well looking at your picture I would guess you were on the slimmer side pre pregnancy? If you were a skinny minny then it's actually normal for you to gain more and that would put you at 35 pounds total.
  • I gained 30 in total last time but I have friends that have gained 40-60lbs and I would never have guessed it.  If your midwife wasn't concerned don't worry, I think you look great.  Are you tall? I know that my doctor was expecting me to gain more since I started out a little under weight last time.
  • Don't worry about what's normal, you body will gain what it needs to support the pregnancy.

  • Wow, could never tell from your siggy. ;P As long as she's not concerned, then nothing to worry about right?? :D  As long as it's a healthy baby that is!

  • my doc always said 30-35 pounds was typical, but I have a few friends who are petite like me and gained 50+ - and it all fell off after the baby. I gained 38 with DD...and was back in my pre-pregnancy jeans within 3 weeks after having her. Try not to worry...and if you are going to breastfeed I swear it melts the pounds off...I ended up below my pre-pregnancy weight (which was small to begin with) and actually had concerned friends worried because I was so thin- but not even exercising JUST breastfeeding.
  • Don't sweat it.  I gained 48 w/ DD1 and 38 w/ DD2 (and had NO problem taking it all off plus more after each!).  I know 2 gals that gained 70 lbs w/ their PG's.
  • Assuming you are not eating junk 24/7 and are following your hunger cues, any amount of weight gain you have is most likely fine-- especially since you were quite slim pre-pregnancy.

I was on the lower end of normal before getting pregnant with Seth and gained 35 lbs.  It was all gone 5 weeks after birth.  Already, I have gained 13 lbs. this pregnancy, exactly the same as I did last time at this point.  I gained 6 lbs. this month, even, and no one was worried.

My midwife was not worried and yes I'm 5'7" and I was about 10 pounds underweight to begin with. I know that can make a difference, but I still feel 40 pounds is a lot of weight for pregnancy!

  • I gained 48 lbs with DD#1 and OB was not concerned in the least. I was small to begin with like you so my body had more weight to gain. The4 average is 25-30 lbs but if your smaller then more is expected larger less and so on.

If it makes you feel any better I lost all but 5 lbs of that weight with a year (most of it was with in 4 months).

  • My doctor said two things:

1- I should try to gain only 15-20lbs

2- She big time stressed that every woman needs to gain a different amount and the only person who can tell you how much to gain is your doctor. I highly recommend that you ask her.

Also, if you are eating right and exercising, you will not have a terribly hard time losing the weight. If you are not exercising or eating right, then you should at least start to help you gain healthy. I'm sure that you're fine weight-wise. Maybe your baby just needed you to gain more earlier. We all gain in different ways.

  • I am almost 26 weeks and have almost gained 20 pounds! I was shocked at my last appointment! My doctor didn't seemed concerned, but I def was! I am average build (5'5" 120-125lbs pre-pregnancy), so am def not looking forward to gaining MORE weight! Everyone is different, but I am hoping it comes off fast!

It's the darn numbers that mess with you, when you haven't had fluctuating weight in your life it is a shocker.  I remember thinking omg 30 freaking lbs! How did that happen? lol  I gained the majority of my weight at the very end so around 38 weeks I stopped looking at the scale and just listened to the good stuff.  I bet you will be all cute belly Wink

I'm not worried about it coming off I'm just worried about the weight being soooo much. But if your basically my build and your getting the same answers as I am then I guess I'm right on track?

  • I have a similar build to you (5'6 and 112 to 115 normally) and I gained about 50 lbs with DS..the whole time everyone told me how tiny I was etc and that I must have gained no weight, very annoying! He ended up being 8 lbs and I lost 30 lbs in a week or two and the rest in a month or two. I think when you are small you do have to gain more, dont worry!

  • I gained 38 pounds with my son, but I was probably 4-5 lbs underweight to begin with.  My doctor's were very happy with my weight gain.  You may not gain a 1lb a week for the next 14 weeks.  My weight gained stopped at 35-36 weeks because I had little appetite (your stomach is like in your throat by that point) and some m/s returned at the end.  You are fine!

PS - I lost it all fairly quickly and was back to me pre-preg weight by 4 monts pp.

  • If you were 10 pounds underweight, then your body probably needs to put on 40 pounds or so! I wouldn't worry about it. Technically, people who start off in normal weight ranges are supposed to gain btw 25-35 (according to my doctor), and people who are underweight are supposed to gain 35-45 pounds. So, you're right on track.
  • If it makes you feel any better I have gained 11lbs but I look gross and huge. You look great and I really wouldn't worry about it. Don't get depressed cause when you are it is easier to pack on the pounds.

  • I gained 40 lbs with my first and it wasn't a big deal - I was more worried about the baby growing than what I looked like afterwards (and was in my prepreg pants by 4 weeks pp anyway).  Keep eating healthy and don't worry about the number on the scale.
  • I don't know a soul who gained only 20-30 pounds during their pregnancy. You really should not be concerned, especially if you were quite thin to begin with and are eating healthily. Your body is doing what it needs to do for your baby - and keep in mind a LOT of that is water weight, extra blood, etc. I lost almost 30 pounds within a week after the birth of my daughter. It is crazy how and what your body does to support a baby.
