I get there feeling great about the weight and just great in general (sciatic pain was at a minimum today). Stepped on the scale and BAM 149 pounds.
My jaw dropped. I voiced my concern to my midwife and she looked at my charts. I've gained 24 pounds and I'm only 26 weeks! WTF
I know that by looking at my siggy everyone is wondering where it is, but it's still a shocker and cannot be healthy that I'm going to gain another 15 pounds through out this pregnancy. That's 40 pounds all together!
I thought 20-30 was a normal weight gain for pregnancy... does anyone know what is the "normal" / "average" weight gain is?
I'm going to waddle my heifer butt over to the pantry and eat some baked goldfish. ![]()
Re: 26 Week Appointment Shocker
Awwww... While I think the average recommended weight gain is between 25 and 30 pounds, if you're on the lower end of the scale to begin with, you can usually afford to gain more. What did your midwife say? Did she seem concerned?

I was on the lower end of normal before getting pregnant with Seth and gained 35 lbs. It was all gone 5 weeks after birth. Already, I have gained 13 lbs. this pregnancy, exactly the same as I did last time at this point. I gained 6 lbs. this month, even, and no one was worried.
My midwife was not worried and yes I'm 5'7" and I was about 10 pounds underweight to begin with. I know that can make a difference, but I still feel 40 pounds is a lot of weight for pregnancy!
I gained 48 lbs with DD#1 and OB was not concerned in the least. I was small to begin with like you so my body had more weight to gain. The4 average is 25-30 lbs but if your smaller then more is expected larger less and so on.
If it makes you feel any better I lost all but 5 lbs of that weight with a year (most of it was with in 4 months).
My doctor said two things:
1- I should try to gain only 15-20lbs
2- She big time stressed that every woman needs to gain a different amount and the only person who can tell you how much to gain is your doctor. I highly recommend that you ask her.
Also, if you are eating right and exercising, you will not have a terribly hard time losing the weight. If you are not exercising or eating right, then you should at least start to help you gain healthy. I'm sure that you're fine weight-wise. Maybe your baby just needed you to gain more earlier. We all gain in different ways.
It's the darn numbers that mess with you, when you haven't had fluctuating weight in your life it is a shocker. I remember thinking omg 30 freaking lbs! How did that happen? lol I gained the majority of my weight at the very end so around 38 weeks I stopped looking at the scale and just listened to the good stuff. I bet you will be all cute belly
I'm not worried about it coming off I'm just worried about the weight being soooo much. But if your basically my build and your getting the same answers as I am then I guess I'm right on track?
I gained 38 pounds with my son, but I was probably 4-5 lbs underweight to begin with. My doctor's were very happy with my weight gain. You may not gain a 1lb a week for the next 14 weeks. My weight gained stopped at 35-36 weeks because I had little appetite (your stomach is like in your throat by that point) and some m/s returned at the end. You are fine!
PS - I lost it all fairly quickly and was back to me pre-preg weight by 4 monts pp.
totally agree with this!!
