Babies: 9 - 12 Months

LO is sick & I'm worried, advice needed. (Long!)

Ok, this is the short version of a long story.

Me = Thursday - Monday I had a horrible sickness bug with vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle aches, fever etc.  I saw the doctor who said although I had some symptoms of H1N1 it probably wasn?t & there is a nasty bug going around  in my area.

DD =

Wednesday, she threw up her bedtime bottle but seemed fine, no fever.

Thursday, she started refusing her food, no vomiting, no fever.

Friday, as I was so sick, DH took her to the doctor, she managed just 10oz milk all day, doc diagnosed a sore throat.

Saturday, she carried on refusing food/milk, she managed around 20oz

Sunday, again, refused milk, we didn?t offer food, she managed around 25oz but vomited 3x

Monday, DH woke her up at 8am and she had been sick overnight, she slept in it (didn?t wake or make any noise, I cried when I saw her, she had it in her hair, her eye, all over her clothes).  She went straight to the doctor who checked her over and said she had probably had the same bug as me.

Doctor?s advice was to water down her milk and not give her solids for a few days.  She has been taking anything between 2-5oz at a time adding up to 20-25oz a day since Monday.  This is watered down formula offered with 7oz water & 4-5 scoops.  She hasn?t vomited since the Sunday/Monday waking up covered in puke incident, which is great.

My concern is, I think she is getting enough fluids and she seems happy enough, alert and smiling.  She gets tired quickly although she hasn?t eaten properly since Wednesday.

This is where I need advice ? when would you start to introduce real food again and what would you give?  She?s obviously been feeling awful and doesn?t have an appetite at all, if I offer a bottle it may as well be poison, she screams.

If you made it this far, I thank you for reading.  If you respond, I thank you even more.

  • Oh I hope she feels better soon.  I'd start with toast if she's on that kind of solids, but if she's still doing purees, I'd maybe just try something that she liked before she got sick.  And just give her a little here and see how she does.  I wouldn't push it with the food as long as she's staying hydrated and keeping the formula down.  Good luck!

  • Is she still screaming when you offer a bottle?  If she is then I would wait until tomorrow to do anything different.  If she isn't then maybe try a regular bottle not watered down.  I wouldn't try solids until she can get a bottle down ok.  I'm just saying what I would do though, I don't know for sure.  I hope she feels better soon and you too, sounds awful.
  • I would keep offering formula but maybe some pedialyte as well to keep her from dehydrating. I would wait on solids until she is back to normal and keep offering the bottle. Poor thing - good luck!
  • She is going to get way more calories and nutrients from the formula than she would from any food. I would focus on trying to get her to take her bottles, and then add food back in when she seems to be feeling a lot better.

If she absolutely won't take a bottle but will take food, I'd try rice cereal mixed with formula or maybe sweet potatoes if she has already had them. I wouldn't try any new foods right now.

    Hope she feels better soon!

  • I would start reintroducing when she is showing signs that she is feeling better. Like pp said, I wouldn't push it.

    Hope she feels better soon!

Thank you both for replying, I know it was a lot to get through!

She isn't screaming when I offer anymore, she's just screaming if she's done and I ask her to drink more.  Tonight she managed around 4oz of non-watered down formula out of a 7oz bottle. So far so good - I'm in the UK so it's almost 10pm here.

I thought about doing the same as when I weaned her, cereal for lunch, then cereal & veggies etc when the cereal is going down ok.   Her stomach must have shrunk over the week.

  • Aw, I'm sorry.

DD has a stomach bug last week and 48 hours DH and I both got it too. Thankfully it was really short lived.

I think fluids and formula/milk are the most important thing at this point. Once she's drinking more of that and keeping it down, I would then reintroduce some simple, bland solids.

That sounds like a good plan to me.  It's encouraging that she had some regular formula and is holding it down so far.  I hope she's on the mend!

This is what my instinct was telling me but I wasn't sure if that was right or not.  She is on 6m+ follow on milk, should I go back to the previous formula 0-6m or will it not matter?

Thanks to everyone who has replied, I appreciate all of your responses.

I breastfeed so am not at all familiar with the different formulas. I would maybe go with whichever one she would take? But you may want to ask your doctor about that.
