Anyone's LO have a funny buttcrack?

Atticus has this strange pucker at the top of his buttcrack.  It looks like a second butthole.  I asked the pedi about it yesterday and she said that she could see an end to the hole and that we needed to make sure that it's stays super clean so it doesn't get infected.  She said that sometimes a pucker like that is a sign that he started to develop Spina Bifida but it never fully developed.  She ordered an ultrasound to be done.

I forgot to ask what she was looking for in the ultrasound.  Any have one done or have any idea of what could be found?

Re: Anyone's LO have a funny buttcrack?

  • it's called a sacral dimple

ETA: generally when you can see the bottom of it, there is nothing to be concerned about.

  • Thanks!  I'm not too worried about it.  I'm sure if there was a true issue it would have presented itself by now.

Can I officially call him Funky Butt?

    LOL.

  • Mine has one too. The doctor didn't seem concerned, but I'm glad you posted this because the link the PP put up was informative.

  • My daughter has that!  The doctor didn't seem concerned when she examined her, so I was never worried either.  That link is very informative, I never knew what it was called.

  • One of my older two children had that and they just outgrew it!  Hope the U/S shows that it's fine!
  • Sydney has the same thing. It is called a sacral dimple. Like you mentioned, our pedi said that it could mean that there is a problem with the spinal cord. She went on to say that it is HIGHLY unlikely, but they have ordered an ultrasound to check it out. She goes on Thursday, so I can let you know what they look for if you want!

  • Now all of you ladies getting ultrasounds are making me nervous since my pedi never ordered one.  Can you see the bottom of it and is there hair growing out of your LOs dimple?

Atticus' is kinda deep and you have to manipulate it a bit to see the end. His is hairless.

if it is relatively shallow, like you don't have to search for the bottom, there is generally not an issue.

DD's has excess hair around hers.  it is a genetic thing.  my little sister had one when she was born, with excess hair.  she grew out of it and the hair fell out.

  • Just wanted to let everyone know...that I have a very very deep one, one where you can't see the bottom. I was tested for everything as a baby, and nothing came up wrong. I am completely fine as an adult. So even if they are deep the dr.'s will just have them checked out, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. They are looking to make sure that the spinal cord is intact at the bottom and it isn't severed or compromised in any way.  Just thought that you might want to hear from someone that has one that would have potentially been a problem, even though it is kind of embarrassing. When I was older and asked my mom why I had it, my older brother told me that is where my tail fell off at birth....he was sooooo mean.

  • Ok I feel better now.  I just examined hers pretty closely and it's not deep.  It is more of an extension of her butt crack and isn't puckered or anything.  There is hair on her lower back, but she is a pretty hairy kid (hair on her legs, arms, ears...).  I'll still ask at her 4 month appt but I'm not freaking any longer,  Smile

    Thanks ladies!
