WTH? Cereal and pancakes are the devil?

I just saw the McD's post below and where it went.

Yikes, I didn't realize that I was an awful mom for this!  DD alternates between a cinn ego waffle w/ milk or honey nut cheerios with milk.  And here I thought this was a good breakfast.  She does have a banana or grapes with that on some mornings too.

Re: WTH? Cereal and pancakes are the devil?

  • Well, they aren't great.  I couldn't eat any cereals, no waffles pancakes french toast... none of it, when I had GD.

Lucky for me I don't like breakfast foods much anyway lol

  • Loading the player...
  • My kids will either have cereal ( in a baggie or with milk) waffles or pancakes.  Danica will sometimes eat a scrambled egg but that is about it.  They love breakfast meats though

  • Kori--but you probably also couldn't eat oatmeal when you had GD, which apparently is an approved breakfast option???

Yeah, my kids choices are cereal or waffles.  And then they get a choice of a fruit or yogurt.  Same breakfast every day...except weekends.

Saturday they get pancakes and sausage (gasp!)

Sunday they get what we call "casserole" which is hashbrowns, eggs and sausage cooked together with cinnamon rolls if they eat well. (clutch the pearls)

  • I hope your aren't referring to my response. I never said they were a "bad" thing, not a great thing though. I just happened to make pancakes this morning. DS is not a breakfast eater. I'm lucky if I can get a yogurt and fruit loops into him most mornings. On occasion he will have an egg and he loves bacon (but I hate frying bacon).
  • Right, but the GD diet is not the right diet for kids.  Sure, a whole grain waffle would be better than ego, I admit that.  But if you look at the food pyramid, the grain is the largest.

She eats tons of fruits and veggies during the day and at dinner and also eats meat.

  • DD has a bagel, corn muffin, waffles or english muffin every single day. On weekends we make eggs and crap.

  • DandR I don't know I detest oatmeal, it never came up LOL  I was able to eat a bagel w/pb or cream cheese though.  ;-)

We do breakfast burritos a lot (scrambled eggs, ham, cheese), the kids love waffles and they're easy in the car, DS is on a yogurt kick lately.  *shrug*  They eat well throughout the day, when it's all said & done they eat pretty well, even if they do have waffles or oatmeal almost daily.  meh.

No, not you... not at all!

  • I think they are fine.  I think balance is important.  An ego here and there is not the devil.  Should it be your main diet, maybe not, but with some peanut butter and banana for breakfast it is pretty sound.
  • Meh.  It depends on the cereal and pancakes.  My kid eats whole grain cereal or granola every.single.day with fruit and kefir.  I don't think I'm downplaying nutrition at all.  She doesn't want, and I don't have time to prepare, a hot breakfast every morning.  She asks for cereal/fruit/kefir every single day, so that's what she gets.  It's healthy enough, and not a battle I feel like having at 7 am every day.

ETA: She also gets *gasp* juice daily for breakfast.

  • Where is the OP?  Anyone???
  • It's a pretty broad statement to say that cereal, waffles and pancakes are bad food.  many of these foods can be made and purchased in healthy versions with more fiber and less sugar.  And, is it really that bad if your child eats 1 dry pancake or waffle for breakfast with fruit?  We're not talking a stack of hotcakes with butter and syrup or a heaping bowl of Count Chockula here.

As it is, my kids barely eat breakfast in the morning, so I'm certainly not going to be spending time making them eggs with spinach.  I'll save that energy for a healthier lunch or dinner.  What matters is how your DC eats as a whole, not how balanced each meal is.

  • What about the whole grain Eggos? Or Kashi waffles? Are those of the devil, or only put you on parenting probation?

One of their fave breakfasts is a waffle with cream cheese and a bit of homemade jam. I think I need to be beaten.

I don't know, LOL, you are asking the wrong person.  But I would think the fruit in the jam should be organic (ideally home-grown) and with no sugar added. Stick out tongue

  • Well, my kid has cereal almost every morning, its what she wants.(Sometimes she will have a waffle, but she doesn't like eggs)  And Lord forbid that 3-4 times a week it is sugary cereal like PB Captain Crunch!!!  But she does have fruit with it because she can't get enough of that either.  And I feed my kid a sweet every night after dinner Surprise

  • Well, the fruit was not organic but I did pick it myself.

Definitely not sugar free-- there are 7 cups of sugar per batch. LOL And the sugar was plain old Domino granulated.

  • FWIW I would consider Ego's unhealthy (unless they make a whole wheat version these days???)

We make a big bacth of whole wheat waffles about once a month (only bc I can't afford the $$$ Kashi ones!) freeze them, and DS eats those for bkfst a lot.
