I feel like a horrible mother

I  just went to take a shower while my three week old was napping on his boppy on the couch. When I got out he was on the floor crying. He some how fell off the sofa. I feel horrible!!! According to what I read online I think he is fine. I feel really embarassed. Should I tell my husband??

Re: I feel like a horrible mother

  • You took a shower and left your 3 week old alone on the couch?

I'm not trying to be rude here but that is just not smart.  Leave your LO somewhere safe next time or bring LO with you in the bathroom and use a bouncy seat.

I would call the pedi... a fall to the floor for a 3 week old seems pretty major.  I know most babies fall off a couch or bed at *some* point in their life but usually not that young or even close to it.

  • Loading the player...
  • First off-get him checked out. He's 3 wks old!!! He's not going to be able to tell you if he's okay. That's a far drop!

2nd-yes tell your husband. Accidents happen. You can't keep that from him.

Now get your bones off the computer & call the pedi. Now!

  • Indifferent Maybe take him to the doctor?
  • yeah...tell your husband.

Also...use a bouncer (it's portable so bring in the bathroom with you) and they are strapped in. No risk of this. I only use the bobby if it's in the middle of the bed and I can watch her every second.

  • This has to be MUD. No-one would really do this.
  • My DS has fallen off the couch too. He was exactly a week old and was sleeping on a sleep positioner on the couch. I was in the kitchen making myself something to eat and the next thing I know, he was crying. I felt so bad that I started crying and telling him that I was sorry.

ETA: I learned my lesson. I don't leave him on the couch anymore if I'm not there. I either put him in the swing or his PNP or bouncer. I don't know why I thought I could leave him on the couch. I guess I was thinking he wouldn't move. Big mistake.

  • I would call the pedi just in case. Better be safe than sorry!!

When DS is napping I put him in his crib and grab a quick shower or if he is awake I put him in his bouncy and bring him into the bathroom with me.

Hope everything turns out ok! :)

  • OMG yes!!!! I thought you weren't supposed to let them sleep in the Boppy mine has a no sleep sign on the tag. I know you feel bad but you have to be careful they only get sneakier and faster. If you turn away without knowing 100% they are secure bad things can and will happen. I put mine in a bouncer and bring him into the bathroom with me and peak out at him throughout the show. I have even showered with him before. I never leave my son unless he is straped into a bouncer or swing or in a bassinet or crib with a monitor near.
  • ok ok i just gotta say us mom come on here for support.. yes i would get him checked and tell ur dh bc it was only an accident..but U R NOT A BAD MOTHER! i just want to b clear on that..we all make mistakes..we r all learning...i kno i learn something everyday from my son.. theres no need to make others feel worse than they already do..

ps and im not saying everyone who replied was

  • Well as you can see, you are going to get flamed for this one.  Even with people saying you are making this up.  Obviously you never thought, "well my baby can fall, but I will just risk it".  You have a lot going on and you now know that you will never make this mistake again.

I would definitely just call the Dr, tell your husband, and take a deep breath.

You'd be surprised. Why do you think those Bumbo seats had to be recalled for a stupid warning sticker that said do not use on elevated surfaces unattended?

    People were actually doing it.

This is parenting 101 though---never leave your child alone on an elevated surface. If I leave Molly anywhere it is on her playmat. She squirms like crazy, even in her sleep.

I agree with you- but you'd be surprised what some people do. Like not put the shoulder belts on a baby in a carseat, for example Stick out tongue

I only leave my son in his PnP or strapped into his bouncy seat. I don't even leave him in his swing when it's on unless it's a quick trip to the bathroom.

  • Are you people freaking kidding me? Why would you remotely think it is ok to leave a baby unattended on a couch?
  • "According to what I read online I think he is fine."

Not to be a jerk but how can reading stuff onlinet evaluate your DS for injuries?       Call your pedi and make an appointment.  Most likely everything is fine but not all injuries are necessarily immediately obvious.

And why would you not tell your husband?

  • Please take him to the hospital.  You cannot mess around with head injuries.  He could have serious head trauma and you wouldn't necessarily know, due to his age.  In the future, please do not leave your child unattended unless he is in a SAFE place.  (FYI, the couch, a chair, tor he changing table are all unsafe places).  I thought this went without saying.

  • I think the Boppy has a big tag on it that says it isn't for sleeping anyway too.

  • This is a place for support but consider "flaming" on subjects like this should be considered tough love. Obviously we all know what its like to have a baby at home and we all love children so if we get defensive for the childs sake, take it. This is a lesson that needs to be learned. Don't leave your baby unattended or not secured. If you do it now and no one gets on your ass about it and you do it again at say 2 yrs and the kid wonders outside or something then what?! If I mess up and drop my kid and my husband lays into me yeah it hurts but who cares about my feelings the more important thing is the lesson is learned and the child is taken care of. Accidents will happen so there is no need to be careless or let ignorance  proke them.

    Yeah it does.

OP I hope you're offline bc you're at the pedi.

  • Wow some people are really nasty. I never thought in a million years  he could push the boppy off the couch. I always make sure his feet cant touch anything so he cant kick off. Obviously I already feel like an idiot and will never make the same stupid mistake again.

  • You're going to get a lot of high and mighties responding to this post, but stuff like this happens all.the.time.  Don't feel bad and you're not a bad mother...just don't let it happen again!

When dd was 3 weeks old she fell out of her swing.  Does that make me an awful mother?  Nope, accidents happen.  I learned from it and never left her in there again w/out being strapped in.  Call the nurse line at your pedi.  Tell them what happened, and see if they want you to bring your lo in.  When I called they said as long as all dd's limbs were moving, she wasn't inconsolable, wasn't vomiting, etc. then she was most likely fine.  They gave me the signs of a concussion and told me to watch for those.  So yes, call the pedi's office and ask if you should bring lo in.  And yes, tell your dh about it.  He may get angry, but he'll get over it.

"And err on the side of caution: If you're uncomfortable with the severity of your baby's fall ? you think he had to have gotten hurt ? or if your baby is acting irritable or confused, take him to the doctor to get checked out."

Quoted from your website.  I would be uncomfortable with the severity of this fall.  Take him to get checked out ASAP!  No one cares if you feel stupid or if you'll make the same mistake again - we just want to know that your LO is okay.  Please take him in.

Are you new to the site hahahaha?!

The baby isn't secure unless he/she is straped/buckled etc. Babies grow fast and are curious even the tiny ones. Just never leave them like that and yes tell your husband!!!!! Oh and if I did the same thing and my baby looked fine and acted fine and everyone I knew told me it happens all the time and he will be fine I would still take him to the Dr for an expert ok. I have already taken him in for less. Your child deserves some overreacting.

Plus you post stuff online you open yourself up to hearing ppls opinions on the subject...this is my opinon nasty or not.

  • You LO may seem fine, but you really need to call the pedi. Like someone else said, he could have a head injury and there is no way to know. If you don't take him in, you will worry all day if he's okay.

Even if you think your baby is ok, you still should bring him to a dr. to be checked. It will also give you peace of mind.

  • Wow, common sense is seriously lacking in this case.

    1. Do not leave you child unattended on high surfaces.

    2. If your child falls from a high surface call the Pedi ASAP instead of listening to what "the internet" said.

    3. Tell your DH/SO of all possible traumatic injuries to the baby.

Log off, call your Pedi to get baby checked out.

Babies squirm and wiggle around. They don't need anything to push off of to move around. They're surprisingly mobile even when they are little.

There's obviously a reason the boppy has a warning not to sleep on it too, so keep that in mind.

The women here are just worried about your baby.

And even though your LO can't touch anything like the back of the couch or a pillow, all he has to do is plant his feet straight down on the couch cushion and push. DS did that when he was several months old and I about had a heart attack.

But please do not let your baby sleep on a Boppy. If they slide down at all their head can tilt and they can suffocate.i

  • PLEASE call your doctor.  He could be fine, but he might not be.  You will never forgive yourself if something is wrong and you didn't get him checked out.
  • Your profile says that you are studying Early Childhood Education. With that, I am thinking this post can't be real. You should know the dangers of leaving a baby unattended, especially on the couch where he/she could fall. Given your area of study, you should feel like a horrible mother, or student. Either one. Take your child to the pedi.

I don't usually flame but this made my jaw drop. Why would you leave him unattended on the COUCH? At least put him in his crib or bassinett or MAYBE his swing but the couch where there are no rails??? And yes, you should tell your husband so that he can knock some better sense into you. Sorry for being so harsh but your baby could've really hurt himself.

  • Obviously you know not to that again. Also don't leave him unstrapped in his swing, bouncer, high chair, grocery car, anything. If it has straps, use them. When you need to put your baby down for a shower, use the pack n play or crib. Somewhere he can be contained and not suffocate.
  • Wow.  Just wow.  Honestly.  I can't even believe that.

Take your kid to the doctor - or at least call the pedi and tell him what happened.

    I can't believe this post.

  • 1. Call the pedi to see what they recommend.

    2. Tell DH.

    3. In the future here are options for taking your shower: leave LO in pack n play or in crib with a mobile to distract him. take him into the bathroom and put him in the bouncer, strapped in with music and vibration playing. etc.

Now you know. Even a 3 week old can wiggle around.

  • Never a child unattended unless he/she is asleep in a crib/pnp and you have a functioning monitor right with you. Please call the pedi to have your ds examined.
  • I can't handle the stupidity on these boards any longer!  You couldn't strap him into his car seat, or wait to take a shower when you COULD strap him into something?!?!

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH EVERYONE LATELY?!?!
