How many ounces in each bag?

I am getting a decent supply going and I was wondering how many ounces of breastmilk I should put in each bag.  I do not have any upcoming needs of my stash, so the only time it would be used is if I am out food shopping and she gets hungry a little early.  I have been doing approximately 3 ounces in each bag.  I would hate to defrost more than I need and so I figured this would be a good starting amount.  If she needs more, defrost another bag, but I don't think she is eating much more than around 3 ounces at this point (but I am not sure!).

Also, recommend your bags please!  I have been using the Medela ones, but I think they are possibly more expensive than others and I really don't care about pumping directly into the bag.

TIA!

Re: How many ounces in each bag?

  • IMO the Medela bags are awful.  Have you tried the Lansinoh ones?  They are fabulous.  Double zipper, freeze flat, etc.  They are my favorite.

I started out freezing in 3oz increments.  But then DS started taking 4oz bottles so I ended up wasting a few ounces.  Now I freeze in 1oz portions.  we are likely nearing the end of bfing due to a strike that we never recovered from, so now I can add 1oz at a time to formula bottles to maximize the duration of him getting some bm.

  • Ooh, the zipper sounds great.  Not a huge fan of Medela bags, but I also didn't have anything to compare to either.  I will be trying Lasinoh next!

Maybe I will do a few different increments.  I hate the idea of wasting bm!

Sorry to hear about your strike... :(

    Thanks so much!

  • I freeze 6 oz at a time, but I have twins. I really like the johnson and johnson bags. They stand up better for storage.

  • I like the Lansinoh bags. I started freezing whatever amounts I had, from 1.5oz up to 6oz. Freezing in 3-3.5oz was best because once he ended up taking larger bottles, we could just thaw 2 bags and it was fine. The 6oz bags were ok, but there weren't many of them. It's a bit much to have in one bag and be sure that you'll be able to use it all, but that worked for us and we never did throw anything out. Now I don't freeze that much because we aren't using it for bottles anymore. We only defrost milk for solids, so I don't freeze in more than 4oz amounts now. Usually now I'm doing 2-3oz bags.

  • I use the Lansinoh bags - cheaper and better quality.  I started freezing about 3.5 oz.  Now I freeze varying amounts, up to 6 oz.

  • I'm freezing in 2, 3, and 4 oz increments.  We haven't needed to use anything out of my stash yet, but I figure with these amounts I'll be able to make up bottles pretty easily for day care, etc...

DS is currently eating 4 oz every 3 hours, but does go for one 6 hour stretch at night.
