Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

50+ words for an 18 month old???

I was reading my What to Expect Toddler years and by 18 months it said that dc can probably say around 50+ words, my ds is no where near 50 words at this point.  The funny thing is at 17 months it said they should be able to say 2 1/2 words so it looks like a huge jump between 17-18 months.

Re: 50+ words for an 18 month old???

  • I think the normal range is BETWEEN 18-50 words.

  • We were just at the pedi (DD is 17mo) and she asked if DD could say more than 30. When I said yes, she asked if I thought it were close to 50. I think so.

All kids are different though. I know two other kids just a little bit younger than DD and they don't say anything at all. My DD is just very chatty.

  • Hmmm.
At Quentin's 18 month appointment, his pedi only wanted him to be saying 15-20 words.
50 words seems a little too high for me for that age. I know some kids can say that many, but I know it's definitely not the norm.

  • parenting magazine says 18 months should know 90 words!! crazy right

  • Wow!  At 15 months they just wanted to make sure he could say 5 words.  I think at 18 months it was 20 words, certainly not 50.  Lucas has just been meeting the minimums - and those 20 words did not have to be consistently spoken, just "has he SAID".  Lucas has said a lot of words (in context but without mimicking) just once or twice.  So I know he KNOWS them, he just doesn't SAY them.
  • At DDs 18 month appointment our pedi asked if she says 6 words.

  • Our doctor at 18 months asked if DD had 20 words.  When I said she has more than 20 he said good and went on to the next on the list.  DD at 18 months had over 50 but each child is different.  What I am getting at is my doctor didn't care that she had over 20 he just wanted to see that she had 20.
  • In my experience there is usually a HUGE vocab jump right around that time. DD had more than 50 words at that age.

  • There was a HUGE jump in the number of words for us right around that time. DS seems like he doubled and tripled his word count overnight. I don't think 50 is the norm especially at the beginning of the 18th month but right around that time normally they just explode with words.
  • DS was born a month early and he typically does hit milestones closer to his original due date so that will probably be the case here as well.
  • My DD def had 50 words by 18 months, but the pedi only asked if she had 20. I wouldn't worry if he's not saying that many yet though. As long as he recognizes and knows what words mean, it doesn't matter if he's not saying them all just yet.
  • DS will be 18 months next week and he has about 15 words.

  • DS has about 25-30 words.  I saw that 50 word thing and asked the pedi at his 15 monh visit and she laughed.  She said that is not the standard at all.  She said she doesn't care how many words they have, she just wants that by 18 months they are making efforts to communicate with you and demonstrating they are understanding many of the things you tell them.

  • I agree with pp....as long as he is showing/wanting to communicate... and you can see that he is learning new words...that is all that counts.

Have you counted his words and written them down?  I did this last month and realized that DS had over 60!  I was thinking it was around 40, but when I actually wrote them down it was alot more!

  • OMG- pedi told us they expect to see THREE words, other than mama and dada, by 18mos!
  • Hearing these things always makes me feel bad. I don't know if I can even count 10 words for DD. Mama, Dad, dog, more, nemo, cat, I think that's it. But she sure does babble a LOT. I guess I'll have to talk to pedi more about this.

  • My mom is a kiddo SLP and says that the 'norm' for 18 mo. is around 50 words.  Jack has no where near that though ... mayyyyybe 10-15.

  • My son had about 20 at 18 months but his vocab. really took off right after that (between 18 and 20 months).  Now he is picking up several words daily and it is so amazing.  I was worried about it too but your DS should hit that word explosion soon.

  • I agree with those who say there was a jump around 18 months. Right before his 18 month appt, we actually made a list and it was at 48, day by day the list grows, he's probably up to about 60 by now.
