How are you keeping them warm?

I know we are not allowed to use blankets in the crib but the last two night I am noticing DD getting cold no matter how many layers or how warm the house is.

I am currently keeping the house at 72, she is sleeping with a long sleeve onesie and a fleece footed sleeper with a beenie. When I wake up for the next feeding her hands are ice and I have been noticing her make a whimper-like cry at night in her sleep. If I pick her up and wrap a blanket around her she stops and warms up.

I can't keep my house any warmer.... I am already dreading our heating bill and DH will die of heat exhaustion if I keep moving it up. I don't live in a particularly cold environment, right now it averages about 40 outside at night and it never snows!

So what are you doing at night to keep them warm? Especially those of you who live where it is really cold in winter?

  • Have you tried swaddling in a blanket?

  • We swaddle also; it keeps her hands warm and she actually sleeps longer as well because she isn't startling herself awake constantly.

    this?

  • Like other said, try swaddling. Florida doesnt get that cold though, its about 80 here during the day, maybe 60 at night...but we used a blanket from the start. =/ Not a big fluffy one, just a blanket.
  • a sleeper, 2 swaddling blankets, a hat and, i admit, a warm blanket (small) up to just below her arms and tucked under her body

i'll reconsider this when she starts moving.

on a side note - my bff's crib sheet kept myteriously coming off at night in one corner. finally my bff caughy her little one pulling the sheet off and putting herself under it. lo now gets a blanket and the problem stopped.

  • I put our DD in a long sleeve sleeper with a beanie and I swaddle her. Then I put a blanket on the lower half of her swaddled body. I put it starting at her belly so it covers her hands and feet. I knew we weren't supposed to use blankets but I figured if she's swaddled and if it's only on half of her, nowhere near her face, that it'd be fine.

  • Swaddle...you could even double-swallow if necessary.  Temp of the hands and feet are not indicative of whether babes are too hot or too cold.  Their tummies are.  Make sure it's not too warm in the house.  68 is the suggested temp.
  • She doesn't particularly like swaddling because how her arms are restricted. She cries until her arms can come out and she puts her hands up to her face. I can keep trying to swaddle because it will provide more warmth, but for now she just wants me to hold her for the extra warmth.

  • I swaddle in a light weight swaddle me, and the put a blanket under her (top folded down as you would if you were going to use it to swaddle) then cover her with that.  I will have to change that when she starts moving more.

wowzers.  We keep our house at 75 at night.  However, I live in AZ, where I get cold when the temp drops to 80.  DS gets swaddled, but usually kicks it off.  We did get some really warm looking sleepers at our shower.  Maybe you could get some warmer clothes?

  • I put socks on ds's hands.

My LO didn't like having his arms in the swaddle either, so we would swaddle him with his arms out.  To keep his hands warm (and to keep him from scratching his face) I put the hand mittens on him at night after his bath.  Connor also sleeps in one of those positioners, so until he starts rolling over, I lay a blanket over him.

She's young enough to break of this....I like the fleece Swaadle Me wrap...keeps my LO warm and even though she resisted at first...she now goes out super fast once swaddled...during her naps in the day I let her arms stay free and she likes to have them up near her face!

  • our dd was the same until she got used to it

  • Our baby likes to sleep with her arms over her head so we swaddle with a receiving blanket - starting right under her armpits.  Sometimes it's comforting to sleep even with a light something wrapped around you.  Can you sleep without a thin sheet at least?
