Burping positions?

Is there some magical burping position that actually makes burps come out? I can burp this kid forever and get nothing - and I know he is gassy because he feeds so gulpy and has hiccups like crazy and spits up the minute I lay him down! I have tried traditional position, and also sit-up position and over-the-knee position and still he has burps stuck in there making his tummy hurt. Poor guy.

Re: Burping positions?

  • My DS is not a burper either. He maybe burps for 3 or 4 feedings a day. We give gripe water for gas, and hope it comes out in some way. I am not sure if there is a fail proof way though.

  • A friend of mine had to sit her LO up on her knee and gently bounce her to get the air bubbles to rise.

  • My LO is not a good burper when we pat her, but if I just let her sit upright for a while after feedings she gets a lot of burps out on her own.
  • I typically sit the baby up in front of me and alternate between patting (sp) and rubbing the back.  Rubbing the back makes him squirmy but the squirming helps to get the gas out IMO.

  • My DH must be magician because he can get our DD to burp everytime he feeds her. He does the over the shoulder technique, where her stomach is on his shoulder, he pats her and she seems to burp very well.

Besides this technique I will sit her down on my lap, facing me and slowly lay her down and then bring her back up. I'll do this a couple of times and then try burping her the way DH does and it has helped.

  • I pat him sitting him upward on my knee...if that doesnt work i usually pick him up over my shoulder and it comes out on its own.

  • Like a few of the PP said I just sit DD on my knee sometimes holding her in a sitting position and that seems to get the burps out the best without me patting on her or anything.
