Breastfeeding

My breastpumping experience = nip hikey

Baby wont latch right, because I have huge flat nipples so its hard to get it IN his mouth. And breast pumping just seems to suck the dear life out of my nipple, giving it an aweful hickey. Anyone else have flat/inverted nippled and found a solution for BF or pumping?

By the way, I still breast feed by pumping my breastmilk by hand. Im getting about 4 ounces in two sessions so its working, but very uncomfy.

Re: My breastpumping experience = nip hikey

  • we use a nipple sheild. I have outie nipples but LO wouldn't latch very well, so we began using the shields and honestly with out them we would have given up.

Lansinoh makes this little thing called a Latch Assist. It sucks your nipple out to help with latch

  • I had inverted nipples and I used the Medela Soft Shells for Inverted Nipples.  They worked like a charm.  My nipples are still big but we have been successfully nursing for 2 months.  When she was a NB I would kind of flip my nipple into her mouth, bad description I know.  I would pinch my areola just behind the nipple and bring her to the breast and when she opened wide I would tuck the top of my nipple into the top of her mouth and then quickly flip the bottom in by the time she chomped down.  I don't knoe if that'll work for you but I would definitely try the soft shells.
  • Definitely get nipple shells. Not shields. The shells will coreect rhe problem of the inverted nipple by drawig it out. Also If pumping is hurting you might wNt to check the flange size. You might to get larger flanges. Good luck.
