I have a pet chipmunk

I have a chipmunk (I named him Theodore) living in my dryer vent.  My dryer vent is low to the ground, so he can very easily can get in.  He is not chewing through anything; so it is not like he is going to end up in my house.  Anytime, I throw clothes in the dryer or turn it on; I can hear him run out.  He just ran out a little bit ago.

I know it gets cold here at night and he probably just wants to stay warm; however I don't think I can let him stay  I think I am going to have to put a screen over the vent (and I just have to remember to clean it out) or will he just chew through it.  My dog walks by the dryer a lot now and listens for it to be moving around.

Oh well, don't chipmunks go into hibernation soon?

Re: I have a pet chipmunk

  • not sure about the hibernation - but I'm sure he just thinks your house is nice and cozy. but I understand - and you probably do want to screen it over - for your dog's sake - and just in case he ever did get in - that you don't want to deal with!

  • I have no idea if chipmunks go into hibernation. For some reason I find that funny, I guess because I never thought about it before! Looks like Theodore will have to find a new home!

Because I'm a nerd who had to know: According to National Geographic  they do hibernate but do not store fat. They eat what they have stored in their burrow throughout the winter. I always thought they were bigger than the pic on the website. They look more like squirrels than I remember.

  • Thanks for the info...he is probably storing his "bounty" in my dryer vent. The tube between dryer and the vent (not sure what it is called) is probably "his tunnel and chamber".  Hopefully, my dryer vent does not become a popular place for all his friends.  He seems pretty harmless.
