The caffiene question

So how much caffiene is everybody actually drinking?  My OBGYN said a little caffiene, a couple times a week, is okay, as long as I always stay under the 200mg limit.  Usually, I have one can of Pepsi or similar soda once a week, so I'm definately under the limit. But I still feel like I'm doing something I shouldn't be.  Today however, I'm craving a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha bad.  This is when I can't wait to not be pregnant!

Re: The caffiene question

  • My doc said I could have some everyday, but not to overdo it and drink a six pack or anything! My sis in law drank DP every day and did just fine. I have three or four a week. I've cut out so many other things... it's like my only little happiness, LOL!

  • My doc told me everyday was fine, she said it could be in the form of one 12 oz. cup of coffee, one can of soda, or one glass of tea.  And I am deffinately addicted to all of those so that helps a little bit.

  • I feel the same way! Everyone says it is ok and I have a soda now and then but I always feel bad after. Everyone on my local was talking about the Starbucks Pumpkin lateea couple weeks ago though and I had to have one, so I went decaf. Tasted just as good and I didn't have any guilt.

  • I don't drink any, but that is not a change from my prepregnancy caffine consumption. Although my dr actually said if I am really tired to drink a cup of tea and she ok'd having under 200mg of caffine everyday. I think you should just go get some Starbucks!

  • I have between 4 and 6 oz. of coffee every morning, and sometimes I will drink a soda in the afternoon. It's awful because I am actually craving soda!

  • I usually have a large iced tea from Chick-fil-a or somewhere every other day and sometimes a cup of hot tea in the morning.?
  • I drink it just about every day.  Usually about 20oz bottle of Pepsi.  I try not to overdue it, but the bubbles from Pepsi really help my nausea.  For some reason non-caffinated sodas don't have the same effect.  And I lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve Pepsi! Angel

  • Have your mocha! Everything is ok in moderation.... When I was told what the limit was, I looked it up and it was like having a two liter of mt dew or something.  I wouldn't suck one down everyday. But today, if you want a mocha...Enjoy!
  • A grande peppermint mocha has 170 mg I believe, or venti as they use the same amount of shots. Just do it. I have and never feel bad. Or coffeemate makes a peppermint mocha creamer which tastes awesome, add that to some decaf at home if your really worried.

12 oz of coffee has WAY more caffeine than one can of soda. A can of soda has between 35-45 mg generally, and 8 oz coffee usually has 100, Starbucks has more. Tea usually has even less than soda.

Anyway, I drink caffeine but always keep it to about 100 mg a day. March of Dimes okays up to 200mg.

There are web sites that will tell you the caffeine in a drink.

My only advice re: that drink you want is that, if you haven't had any at all, most of those Starbucks drinks have lots more caff than a regular cup from home so it could be quite a jolt. Smile

  • I have a can of diet pepsi every morning without fail.

  • On mornings that I am really tired from sleeping really poorly the night before, I drink a Cappuccino Cooler that you mix with milk. I'm not a big coffee person otherwise. I do sometimes crave a soda and had a Pepsi last night when we were out for dinner with friends. I figure once in a while is fine, I don't drink it every day. I have a cup of tea maybe once per week but if I had some caffeine that day, I usually won't have more later.

  • Not to sound repetitive, but I too drink caffeine.  I just don't drink it when I am at home. But I work nights so I drink a "baby" soda when I get there and one at 4 AM to get me through.  My MD said people have been known to do much worse while pregnant than have a little caffeine, and hell, I gave up smoking crack and Jim Beam so I deserve to still have my caffeine.  (j/k :)  )

  • I avoid it as much as I can, but if I am craving a coke or a yummy coffee I will indulge. It is so rare that I do now and I don't think it is hurting the baby at all, just making him a little more active. :)
  • I have a coffee just about everyday, usually a tall or a grande 1/2 caff. from starbucks. ?Totally fine!
  • I usually drink one small cup of joe a day. I didn't drink any in my 1st tri though.

The chemicals used to decaffeinate coffee beans are a lot worse for you than the 150 mg of caffeine in a grande pumpkin spice latte.

  • I did completely without till week 15 or so, then I started having 1-2 caffeine drinks a week. It's maybe gone up to 3-4 days a week now, but I try to do small doses!

  • My doctors said caffeine is fine every day, under the 200 mg limit, of course. There were only a few weeks when I had horrible m/s that I didn't drink it. I have a cup of coffee every morning at home, and a couple of times a week, I'll also have a soda in the afternoon.

  • I have been craving a peppermint mocha ever since the red cups came out last week!  I think I will just get a peppermint hot chocolate today though.  Yum!!

This is what I do too. My OB said not to worry if it was every once in awhile.

  • Here is a great website that gives you the caffeine content on lots of drinks.

  • I usually have one soda OR one coffee a day.. But sometimes I go a few days without it, just depends on my mood.

  • I drink a cup (in a pretty decent size mug) every morning.  OB said it was completely fine.  Today I had a tall Peppermint Mocha instead.. go for it.. it was gooooood.

  • Moderation is key. Mayo docs say that a can of caffeinated beverages/day is OK. I try to avoid it, but sometimes on my night shifts I need a pick me up. I think I have had about a 24 pack of caffeinated pop during my pregnancy. What's funny, is that I didn't know that sunkist lemonade had caffeine, and I had bought a 12 pack of that. OOPS!

  • None, but that is just a personal decision. I am way too paranoid! It took us 2 years to finally get pregnant and I am constantly worried about the state of the baby. Although my worrying is probably just as harmful! I am a mess! :)

  • I might have a diet coke when we go out to eat, but otherwise any soda I have is decaffinated.  I had de-caf tea when I had a cold, which I know still had caffiene but very little.

Isn't the big question about caffiene is whether or not it promotes miscarriage?  Does that translate to early labor for us?  Just wondering.

  • I just committed to give up soda altogether once I found out I was pregnant.  And I never drank coffee before that, so diet coke was pretty much the only thing I had to give up.
