2nd Trimester

Low lying placenta anyone?

I just got a call back from my MW. She told me that I have a low lying placenta and that it is only a couple of centimeters from my cervix and that I will have to go back for a f/u u/s at 28 wks. Anyone else have a low lying placenta? Is it anything to worry about?

Re: Low lying placenta anyone?

  • Me. They saw mine at my 20 week ultrasound. I just went back on Wednesday for a f/u and should find out today if it's moved up. It's not really anything to worry about yet. At least I'm not. If it doesn't move up as you get closer to full term I've read they'll schedule a c-section as the placenta blocks the 'exit'. It can also cause bleeding as you near full term. I'm not worrying until it gets closer.

  • I'm in the same boat. I go in next Thursday to see if it's moving.

  • I had one last time.  It was no big deal.  It moved up as the uterus stretched (which they told me almost always happens).  And you get an extra look at your LO  :)
  • I have complete previa, meaning it's totally covering the cervix. Can't get much lower than that!  I'm just supposed to call my doctor asap if I have any bleeding.  I'll have another u/s at 28 weeks to see if it's moved.  It is less likely to move if you have complete previa, and very likely to move if you have low lying placenta.

  • No need to worry yet. I had the same problem. I believe only 10% of low lying placentas, as opposed to placenta previas, diagnosed around 20 weeks, are still that way at delivery. Don't quote me on those exact figures, though. Stick out tongue

They usually move up as the uterus grows. Mine did, and I had a successful vaginal delivery. Try not to stress this early. Good luck!

  • I just had an appt today and my doc said my placenta is lying low too. He said not to worry because as your baby and uterus continue to grow the placenta will likely migrate. WTE agrees and says the odds of it going all the way to term like that are 1 in 200. This made me feel a little better, hope it does for you too.

  • Yes, they measured mine at ~1 cm away from the cervix on Monday.  I have a 6 week f/u U/S to check on the position, but they said nothing to worry about.  Most of the time the uterus grows more towards the cervix, making it look like the placenta has "moved", although it's just the position is different.  They told me I don't need to worry about being on pelvic rest or anything else like that, just to call with any bleeding.
  • My placent was measured as being ~1.2cm away from my cervix on Wednesday.  He said I'll have a follow up ultrasound around 30 weeks and that it normally is more than 3 cm away from the cervix (what they like to see) 95% of the time when they check again.  He did say that if it stayed that way, I would have to be on a modified bed-rest type deal for the last 10 weeks to prevent bleeding/possible abruption.
  • I have a complete previa, and it hasn't moved, i just had to have an extra u/s because of cramping. As long as you follow the Dr.'s instructions, and pay attention to your body you don't need to worry.
  • Mine is 5 MM away, so I have to go in at 28 weeks for another to u/s to see if its migrated north. They said 90% chance it will - but in the case that it doesn't, then I'll have to have a C-section. And no sex until that ultrasound. I'm not worried though...the stats seem to be on our side.

    3 weeks to go....

     Good luck!
