How do you put LO down for a nap?

I've never had a problem getting DD down to sleep at night, but daytime naps are a different story.  At first we'd have to rock in her arms, then we got her to fall asleep in her bouncer, but that's not really working anymore.  How do you put LO down for a nap?  Do you have a routine like you do a bedtime routine?  Does LO always nap in the same place so that he/she knows it's naptime?  I will be appreciative of any ideas you can share!  Thanks!

  • we use the swing (and lately a pacifier) but each day is different still.  when we're out and about - he just sleeps in the car/stroller.

  • I don't...I just cuddle him or let him sleep whenever...I'll leave that up to the daycare lady when I go back to work next week...I'm savoring my days with him at this age.  I think it would be nearly impossible to put him down for a nap if I wanted to though since he hasn't set a daytime nap schedule.

  • my LO will usually get a jump start on his nap if i walk him in a stroller, or take him for a car ride...   when i wear him in a carrier he normally sleeps in it. and if he doesnt get enough nap time in the day, holy cow does he get fussy at night.
  • Today we both took a nap in my bed. It was the first time since in a long time that she actually slept somewhere other then my arms during nap time.

  • No routine... DS falls asleep whenever he wants, wherever he wants, however he wants, lol.  I never "try" to get him to sleep.  He runs the show.

  • Marley will only nap in her swing, stroller, Moby or my arms. She's starting to only take little naps now though, 1 hour tops.

  • Thanks for the ideas so far.  I'm only try to get LO to nap because after 2 hours of being awake at any time, she gets tired but won't sleep on her own.  She fights it and then gets super cranky.  DH and I have to make her go to sleep, otherwise, she can get inconsolable!

My DD is the same. She stays awake until she gets all fussy and cranky. It has really helped us for me to kind of watch for her sleepy cues (heavy eyes, yawns), and then to swaddle her and get her to sleep in my arms. We try to follow the "eat-awake-sleep" cycle. Right now she mainly just naps as I hold her or wear her. Once a week or so she'll be tired enough to go down for a "real" nap in her PNP.

I've been wondering about the whole "nap" thing too--like you, she's a champ sleeper at night, but naps are a whole other story.
