Multiples

Can I ask a quick question?

I just found out that I am pregnant with twins. Totally unexpected, but anyway- I am only about 5.5 weeks along and we clearly saw two on the ultrasound.

Is this uncommon to see this soon? Someone asked about it and made it seem like it was early?

I googled 5 week twin ultrasound, and mine looks very similar to those I see. I have obviously not read very much on this yet!

TIA!

Re: Can I ask a quick question?

  • No, it's not uncommon to see them this early. Some people might think it's uncommon b/c a lot of Dr's office won't DO u/s's this early... I know my Dr's office won't do them until at least 8 weeks b/c then if there is a heartbeat you are guaranteed to see it then.

  • I think that 5.5 weeks is not the typical time that most people have an ultrasound, so it might sound 'early' - most people don't even realize they are pregnant that early on.  I had my first u/s and found out I was having twins at just about 8 weeks.  I know at that point they said it was unlikely that there would be a 'disappearing' twin (if you search on that, I'm sure the internet can explain it much better than I can!).  We saw 2 strong heartbeats, and if that's what you saw, chances are, you are in fact pregnant with twins. The only reason we had an u/s that early was because I had a m/c a few months prior to that and the NP was kind enough to give us a quick peek for peace of mind.  Needless to say, a bit more anxiety resulted from that ultrasound than what was intended.  Anyway...welcome to the board and hope to 'see' you around!

  • That is when we found out we were having twins.

It is typically early to know that soon just bc most women don't see the doctor until at least 2 periods are late and then most don't get an u/s until the big one unless there is something else going on.

    Congrats & Welcome

  • i think it's typically pretty early to find out, like pp's said - because most people don't have u/s's that early!

but for now...congrats and welcome! :)

  • Thanks ladies! I had a Mirena, so they had to do an u/s before they removed it to be sure.

  • Congrats and welcome :)  My first u/s was not until 7 weeks but I know a lot of people see twins much earlier.

  • I had my first u/s at 5 weeks with the RE, and he said that he suspected twins at that point, but wouldn't confirm. The 6 week u/s very clearly showed 2. I would think at 5.5 weeks odds are pretty good that you could see something. Good luck!
  • We found out at 6w1d and saw 2 heartbeats.  We had such an early u/s because we had fertility treatments and suspected multiples. People are just not used to hearing about an u/s that early. Congrats!

  • Congrats! Happy to have you here!
  • i found out at 5w.

    congrats!!

  • We saw one sac at 5w1d, and thought it was a singleton.

But at 6w3d, there were 2 heartbeats in that sac, meaning identical twins.

So, had they been fraternal twins, we would have known at 5w1d.  I got early ultrasounds because of fertility treatments.

    Congrats and welcome!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • At 6w2d we saw 2 distict babies, 2 sacs & 2 heartbeats.  You were probably a few days early to see heartbeats.

    Congrats!

  • Congrats and Welcome!!

My first u/s was also at 5wks. My RE wouldn't do one that early, so my DH who is a doctor did it. We suspected multiples and were in the process of adopting 2 children so we needed to know ASAP. My u/s also looked like the ones I found online.

  • Congrats!!  The doctor found mine at 8 weeks due to some spotting.
