So I called the advice nurse for my pedi's office today, as I've been super frustrated with my crappy BF supply and had some questions about my DS who poops in the middle of the night (multiple times, it's awesome).
I went through all I'm doing to keep my supply up (seriously, everything - you name it, I've tried it), and she happily informed me that she knew EXACTLY what my problem was.
Sleep. Apparently I'm not making BM because I don't sleep, or rather, DS doesn't sleep (we're up every 3 hours to eat, plus additional times for the aforementioned pooping)
She also told me that I'm eating all wrong as well. For instance, I need to cut ALL tomato products out of my diet, and spinach...sigh...So much for tonight's manicotti...
Re: Turns out - I AM doing it all wrong (BF)
I know tomatoes because of the acid and resulting rash.
What's wrong with spinach?
She said it's too hard on his stomach... tomato products (including ketchup), any citrus, berries, broccoli, cauliflower, or green leafy vegetables....
So, pretty much my whole diet....
Aw...thanks. I'm just mad at myself for not calling earlier. Especially because I was unknowingly eating a bunch of foods that are hard on my poor baby's stomach
But I DO get extra points for trying!!
It might be fine if your baby isn't having trouble with them, I'm not sure...
She said squash, peas, green beans, carrots, peppers are all fine. Pasta is fine as long as you're not having it with a red sauce.
I would get a second opinion, ASAP!
thanks for the info!
he seems fine now but if he starts acting weird, i might try changing my diet. i hope your BFing improves with the new info!
foods introduced in breastmilk are foods your baby will like. i dunno, i want my baby to like spinach and broccoli!
i heard gassy foods are not gassy for the baby...the fiber isnt in the BM.
i think i would think twice before giving up really heathy foods.
Don't beat yourself up. That certainly does not qualify as doing it all wrong. Some babies poop a LOT. My four month old still poops after just about every feeding. She's starting to chill out a bit at night, but that is a recent development. My lactation consultant and pediatrician say that's fine. Every baby is different and it doesn't mean that I have to change my diet.
Just MHO, I think you will be MORE successful with breastfeeding and keeping your supply up if you are actually eating. If you're dealing with some crazy restrictive diet, I can see that causing more problems. Not to say that food allergies are not possible, but I'm suspicious that this woman was able to diagnose you over the phone and that the only symptom you mention is that the LO poops a lot.
Also, what are you supposed to do about the "not getting enough sleep?" A lot of babies just eat a lot and allowing them to eat is what keeps up your supply.
Maybe she's right, but something sounds a bit off about this.
THIS. I love my pedi, but no way.
What about your LO's behavior makes your pedi think you need to change your diet?
Eating a healthy diet - including tomatoes and spinach! - helps supply. Of course, so does sleep. But for realz? If every mom could just magically sleep more to boost supply, we'd all have too much milk.
I'm sorry your pedi made you feel like a failure. That sucks.
Thanks, Ladies! I'll call an LC tomorrow. It didn't occur to me that this info could be off, I tend to blindly trust the docs...
There are some foods that are known to make babies gassy - but I didn't think tomatos was one of them.
I was also told that you really do need to rest/sleep when baby does and keep hydrated or else your supply will tank - that was from an LC and a nurse at the hospital.
I think seeing a LC is a great plan. The sleeping thing doesn't make sense to me because when you wake, he's eating. If you weren't sleeping at night and also not pumping and not feeding then that would make more sense. But each time LO gets on the breast, it's a boost to your supply even if a small one.
The tomato thing doesn't sound right to me.
And I read my comment again and realize that I may have come across as snarky which wasn't my intention. At my particular pedi's office, they just lack the knowledge on how to increase supply and general breastfeeding issues. Luckily DD's pedi has a growth chart for bf babies handy and he's one to feel that if she's gaining weight he doesn't care where she's getting the food from (within reason, obviously).
